Hi everyone,
I am looking for a scanner so I can start scanning my own negatives. I asked my parents for one as a christmas present but they have said they have no idea what they are looking for. Anyway long story short, I want a flatbed scanner that can scan both 35mm and 120 negative and slides. It can be mega expensive (credit crunch an' all) but not some cheaper one that produces rubbish scans.

What scanners are good and good value for money?

Epson 4490 (if you can find one) is good for the money.
 
I've been pleaased with the results from my Canon 8800F - as recommended by Chaz ^^^

Works with 35mm slide or neg strips - will do 2 strips of 6 negs in one go, 4 slides in carriers or a strip of 120 up to 22cm long (3 frames of 6x6, 4 of 6x4.5 etc.), canon scanning software is reasonably non-hostile and decent enough, bundles Silverfast SE is about as user friendly as a cornered rat imho, however the results it gets are worth the faffing and hassle.
 
Not sure how much the Canon costs but if it does 3 frames of 120 at a time then it's one up on the Epson 4490 which only does two and is a royal PITA sometimes.
 
Another vote for the V500 here. Its not as good as a dedicated 35mm scanner such as the Nikon or Minolta ones but it does the job. Also has the additional benefit of being able to do MF. You might need to invest in some non-reflective glass to flatten the negs though as the holders are horrible, especially the MF one.
 
A vote here for the Epson v700, it can do 35mm and 120 (2 strips at a time).
It will also do mounted slides. 300/400KB file size is big enough for slides, negs can be massive if you want. (16Mb)

Cheers for the info guys, I've been looking at the V500. It has very good reviews and it is relatively cheap.
