I'm in the market for a new flash as I'm fed up with the off-cam limitations of my Di622. I started off fairly set on getting the SB-900, but all the shops I go to keep steering me towards the Di866, at a considerable cost saving to boot! (I'd have understood better if they were trying to sway me to a more expensive one!) I've only recently started using flashes so don't have a great deal of experience and don't want to repeat the mistake I made buying the 622

Anyone had experience or knowledge of both that can can give some insight?

I don't have any experience to offer you but maybe the new SB700 should be on the list too?

Davince - out of interest, what limitation do you have with your current Nissin unit and what are you looking for? Might help narrow it down :)

The reason it was sb900 or 866 was because I have a fairly good money off voucher on the sb900 lol. Does the 700 have any advantages over the 900? Must admit not looked at that one!

Limitations with the 622 are down to off-cam capability - can't be fired with either of my triggers, doesn't want to flash off sound triggers, and optical slave can only be triggered by nikon flash, ruling it out for use with my older guns.

Just get the SB900 compatibility and use guaranteed. I bought one full price the other week full price and very happy with it, so if you have money off....what are you waiting for?

The sb900 is pretty cool I'm saving for it or mayb there b a new sb out in the new yr is my suspicion... Sb1000?

Get the SB900, it's an awesome bit of kit. If you're going to be using it off camera, the SB900 will be ideal as it's got loads of power and is the ideal partner to the Nikon CLS system.

I have one SB900 and would like another four or five, they're that good!

No can't say that I have had that. Although I did do that to my old SB600 so I am glad there is a visual indicator on it now, but haven't been close yet.

I was a little worried about size at first and checked it against the SB700, but both fitted in exactly the same location of my old SB600, and weight wise there is no difference between them.

Price was about £60 difference so easy choice in my case.

It's well documented on the net (or at least it was). Mine used to overheat after a lot of use. I researched it and found out that it was suggested changing to non rechargeable batteries. It cured mine instantly. I haven't changed back since.
This may explain it a bit better. Mute the sound though!!

I use my SB900 for pap type blasting... never had a problem.

was there not a firmware upgrade which reduced the overheating/powerdown issue somewhat?

I'm watching this with a keen eye, as I have pretty much decided on the Di866. Primarily as I was looking at a used SB600/800 an the price was keen in compariosn for a much better unit. Apparently...

I have 2 SB-900 units and never had a overheating problem with either, used with internal batteries only and with external battery pack.

I have had my sb900 about 12 months now & never has it overheated, i have heard they have been known to, but never has mine!

That seems bizarre to me, I'd have thought the higher voltage and resultant faster recycling would meant quite the opposite!

Just had a look at nikon external battery pack - am I going mad or are they really charging £150 for a plastic box to put 8 batteries in?!!

Don't believe everything you read on the internet, it has got a habit of blowing a small understanding out of proportion to a serious issue.

If you follow all advice online and believe everything everyone should have a focus problem with the D7000 (nothing to do with users ability ofcourse), never ever ever drive a Toyota and never ever use a protective filter as they will damage your lens even more when they break :naughty:

But it cheap, buy it twice .... Sb900 all the way or you'll be wishing you had every time those limitations come into play

Yes, so instead pop onto Ebay and buy the cheap plastic box from the Maoists instead.

It contains no electronics, fairy dust or japanese nuclear fallout - its just a plastic box with a battery connector....

I'm thinking of a step further, just using my power packs from my other hobby (radio control helicopters) as I have loads of lithium packs ranging from 7.2v to 13v with massive mah that cost pennies in comparison! Will have to research acceptable voltage inputs further but a quick look suggests the sb900 can take up to 15v?

i have no experience of an SB900, but i believe its similar to the Canon 580EXII. I can't afford to spend £270 on the 580EXII, so I have just ordered a Di866 (it's sitting in Heathrow right now). I'll post a review on here, but from what I understand its a serious contender to the big guns from Canon and Noink.
