SB 800 vs SB 900 power

Does anybody know if the SB 900 is more powerful that the SB 800?

it's less powerful! but has a greater zoom range which may make up for it - not much in it - I use both.

sb900 has a gn of 34 and the sb800 has a gn of 38. In real life no difference as the increased zoom range makes up for it.

Just to add to the previous replies (which are correct) because the zoom range is greater and because the manufacturers calculate their guide number at the maximum zoom range, the guide number is artifically higher on the SB-900 than the artifical guide number on the SB-800

Hmm interesting, so to digress slightly, should the guide No. be based on the zoom setting at 50mm?

well its based on how far the flash can throw light, so the inbuilt reflectors and focussing bits help that
