Yes
Am i right in thinking on the D200 you can use it as an off camera flash using the commander mode?
Cheers

Absolutely..... right in one! Bear in mind you still get an output from the 'on-board' flash.

You are correct.

Is that something to be concerned about?
I'm abit new, i've watched a video on strobist, but still abit clueless.
Cheers

I'm not sure with the D200 but with the D80 and D300 you can set the onboard flash to --

That way it will only fire the pre flash and won't effect the picture.

Nah...... just gives a little sparkle in the eyes of portraits! Some people (togs) don't even notice :naughty: go for it!

I thought you could turn it off ... :suspect: ... the on board that is ...

Goes off to find manual ... :D

:p

Page 294 of the manual says...... (amongst other things)

"The built-in flash does not fire, but the AF-assist illuminator
lights. The built-in flash must be raised so that it can emit
monitor pre-flashes."

There you go..... learn summat new every day!

Smashign, been meaning to get one for AGES Time to pull my wallet out and check the funds i think!

cheers Everyone :)

Ok.... that was a quote for a D300 Grrrr!

Now - on page 163 of the D200 manual..

"Built-in flash does not fire, but AF-assist illuminator lights. Built-in flash must
be raised to allow monitor preflashes to fire. Lightning symbol is not displayed in control panel
flash-sync mode display."

I don't usually do mornings! ;)

Beat me to it Chuckles ... :D ... even if you did have to go through two manuals ... ... but in my defence I was making Jill's tea for when she gets back with the dog ... ... I don't do mornings either ...

:p

dont know if it helps, and is the same on your camera. but on the D70 (mine) you can turn the output from the onboard flash right down and it will still work the commander mode

doh please ignore my post, thats what i get for not readind ALL the replies /blush

Yes you can. Just go into the menu bit and set the flash to commander.

Then it's just dead easy to use...

Example 1: no flash using ambient light*–*frankly it's rubbish!

Eaxmple 2: with pop-up flash raised, no changes to settings but with the SB800 set on remote with +2 of exposure comp (the flash is on the keyboard of the iMac)

ooo impressive!
Really wanna get one, cant decide though, 50mm or a sb-800

SB800. If you have a kit lens (18-70mm) then you already have a 50mm, albeit without the f/1.8 aperture. Flash is good*–*not enough people play with flash....

 So if you have a 70-300mm theoretically you have the 85mm range covered so why get the 1.8 or 1.4...lol;) Rich get the 50mm its a great lens and look for a used sb800  Savings will pay for the 50mm..

Seena few used Sb-800s for 179.
mmm might get both!! lol

Cool thread, is this doable with the SB600 too?

Good question wail, they're alot cheaper!

You can use the SB600 as part of a wireless group or as a remote unit but it's not possible to set it up the master.

In cable use it can be Master but NOT wireless.

Thanks for the reply, and sorry if I seemed to have hijacked the thread for a while!

Anything that helps me is welcome. :p

Still not ordered one.
I'm doing some after wedding photos next saturday, and i feel if i don't have one i'm going to regret it badly.

Vescri, if you want to borrow one of my SB-600s I can send one up to you. I've got three and won't be needing them all next weekend, there is also an SB-800 you can borrow but I'll have to find the battery door as I use an external battery pack.

Let me know.

PM'd Hacker.

I'm still on the fence about this. Should I order the SB800, or keep my SB600 and order the master controller SU800, or wait to see what the rumour-mills churn-out? I've read on another thread, here, of news of SB900

Since I am in no hurry for this, I figure I can wait a bit :)

Just a quick note regarding the output of the onboard flash, when using CLS... (with a D200 at least)

You can set it to NOT contribute to the image, as someone said earlier. You just select --

However, if you are shooting close up, even when set to --, it WILL still contribute. Presumably it is still 'glowing' from the pre-flashes, and is still bright enough to illuminate very close subjects.

This info is backed up by the manual, and I've tested it too.

Just wanted to get that in :D

Hacker is a super star!!!!

Get the sb-800

it can act as the su800 or as a flash - best of both worlds - the su-800 can only act as the commander

Can I have the SB200, when mounted on my D200, not fire off? Just to have it control other remote / off-camera flash units?

Great, thanks for the feedback :)

If I remember correctly, in commander it doesn't affect the exposure

Just incase you missed my post as it was on the previous page...

And to also add, it CAN be set to contribute to image if you like, and at any level you want.

:D
