Yes
Io currently have a Nikon d90 and sb-400 flash. I'm now seeing the limitations in this flash by boot being able to swivel for when taking portrait shots.

So the question I have is, do I just get a cable top enable me top use the sb-400 off the camera, or do I sell the sb-400 and purchase something like a nissin di622?

Not sure my budget will stretch to a 2nd hand sb-600

A flash that is independant (albeit connected by a cable) of the camera would always be my choice over one fitted to the hotshoe. Put simply, because you can control the angle of light it enables you to work the shot better to create something more attractive. The only limitation is the length of the cord.

Not sure about how effective an SB400 will be in the long run but I'm sure that using a TTL cable will at least mean it can provide light that's better than that coming off the top of the camera :)

Are you looking at the Nissin as an off-camera (wireless) unit? Any flash that's independant of the camera without a wired connection takes things a step further and allows you total creative freedom. Is the Nissin compatible with CLS so could be triggered and controlled by your onboard pop-up flash?

Don't forget. If you use a cable, you'll need to juggle holding the flash, the camera and using the zoom. That is if you don't have a tripod.

The nissin di622 is an excellent flash for the money a mate of mine gets great results with his on the D90 , I think its triggered by the light from your pop up flash , where the Nikon SB600 is triggered wirelessly

Yeah, takes a bit of getting used to to, shooting one-handed....

.....wait until you want to have flash coming in from the right... that's when holding the camera in your left AND pressing the shutter release become an art form. :D

Thanks for your replies.
Am I correct in thinking that if u brought the sb600 I could control and fire it from my d90 without any additional hardware?

yes you can

I bought one Last month , its excellent

Don't know what the CLS interface on the D90 is like but it's a useful feature, although the pre-flashes often confuse people into thinking the pop-up flash (even when disengaged to a degree) contributes massively to flash exposure.

Well just sold my sb400 so now ha e to decide what to replace it with.

Think I may try and get a 2nd hand sb-600

Used '600 is good, although Calumet's ebay site was doing SB800s for as little as £150 best offer....

look at MPB - they usually have a fair selection in.

If you need to stay well under budget then try one of the older digital compatible flashes like the SB80dx - basically the forerunner of the SB800. Not sure on the overall spec of it in terms of full compatibility with new DSLRs but I had the SB28dx and that worked fine with my D2x. Think you'll pick up a good '80dx for about £100 :)

Thanks, had a look and their cheapest is 164 which isn't too bad a guess.
But now I'm wondering if it's £64 better than a nissin di622 mk2

If you're not in too much of a rush I'd keep scouring the "for sale" section on here , they do come up from time to time

have you put a wanted ad up ?
