Sawman's 52 Quality

My take on Candid. I had hoped to do something this weekend but my plans have been changed.
Wonder if that hair is her natural colour.:D

Love the hair colour it really stands out. Perhaps not the most flattering of tops ... it's the mother in me ... "are you going out wearing that top !!"

I'm actually really surprised to see a people image from you this week Charlie . . . I was expecting a candid wildlife shot. Not that I'm disappointed.
The hair really does catch your eye - and I'm sure that was the intention when she dyed it. It's another one of those shots where I want to know more about where it was taken and who she is.

And that top! . . . yes, I can hear my mother saying "are you going out wearing that top !!" as well

Cheers. It may come as a bit of a surprise to many. I used to do loads of portrait shots. I think I prefer candid to posed shots though.
One thing I would really like to do is go to the Whitby goth weekend. Maybe someday.

Fit's the theme perfectly Charlie... What hair colour ... actually the hair colour was the first thing I noticed... two tone as well... Being really picky, and it may well just be my monitor, there's a couple of areas, that seem a little bit over exposed (I mean photographically :D)...

I'm glad I've got boys and not girls too... I know what they're going to be like... I can remember... ;)

Playing catch up again!
I had hoped to go to a local market to take some "produce" shots. Finished up working in a wood!
My attempt at Produce.
Sawn produce with "moody" trees behind.

Is that ivy strangling that poor tree to death in the background?

No! It is providing lots of nest sites for wee birds! Often see Goldfinch hanging about there. Wren, Chaffinch too.
Lost one of my big beloved Scots Pine to the gales this morning. I will have to see if I can salvage any timber from her & then make something a bit special from it.

I really like the contrasting colours of the wood vs the background in your produce shot - very appealing!

Phil

My thinking on "Quad" Not sure if it is what is wanted or not, but here goes.
4 shots on the theme of Larch trees.

1 The flower which have just started to come out. This will be a cone later.

Larches_006.jpg

2 The cones. The red squirrels feed heavily on the seeds during the winter.

3 The tree. They grow in many forms, from tall & straight to this rather stunted specimen.

4 If you wait a hundred years Larch can be made into all sorts of useful things. Here is one I made earlier!

Patience of a saint :D

Just catching up Charlie

Mind you, its good to see you still keeping abreast of things with the candids :D

A lovely set of pictures progressing through the life cycle of the tree, and I particularly like the first one of the larch bud.

Thank you all for your kind comments. Sorry I could not show the fresh new needles (leaves). There are none as yet!

A wee story. Some years ago, during my timber harvesting days I was asked by the woodland manager of Atholl Estates if I could get our lorry to remove & dump an old Larch that was growing too close to the wall of the Japanese Garden.
This Larch turned out to be a big lump of a thing about 4 ft through at the base. Huge limbs had grown from it too.
Turned out though that this was one of the ORIGINAL European Larches that an earlier Duke of Atholl had brought into the country from Switzerland as a seedling.

This tree was about 270 years old if I remember rightly.

Now me being me. I dumped it on the saw & milled it. Got some lovely wood out of it which I still have in store waiting on just the right project.

Some of the wood also went to the restoration of the water wheel of the bucket mill at Finzean in Aberdeenshire.I have yet to go visit that place, but it will be good to see how the wood is doing.
Guess you are all about sleeping now so I will belt up!:D

LOL no the background is also interesting Charlie TFS

I love your quad, Charlie. I had never seen larch flowers before - beautiful. All the photos are excellent. It's a clever idea and tells a story.

Jenny

Thank you. I had guessed they were things that would go unnoticed
(flowers) & this morning there was little wind so the idea came to me to do that for my Quad.:)

Good idea for 'quad' and the 1st image is really good. I like your take on it as it tells a story

Nice work, a good take on the theme

Although, I'm not sure the 'done in a week' time line is correct on this one or you've been planning this one for a long, long time and your real name is Bilbo, (or insert other old film character here).

Thank you. I have had several attempts at capturing the "flower" over the years but a slight breeze has always beat me.
I was trying to tell a story, it worked!

Not me! Though I did enjoy Walton's Mountain.:p:lol:

I love the story told by these shots, Charlie. Like Jenny, I've never noticed larch flowers before - they look really unusual. My favourite shot is the cones, though. The bokeh is lovely and the cones are crisp and sharp. Very nice set.

I also enjoyed your story about the Duke's old larch tree - I suppose there would be a preservation order on something like that now/ What are you going to do/make with the wood you still have? Mr JG has got all sorts of timber he treasures and saves for 'just the right project', so I'm interested to know if such a project every comes along. ;)

Jean

I have never seen larch flowers before so your opening image was an immediate point of interest for me.
I liked the progression through the images which read to me as: flowered, fruited, weathered and worked.

I think this set is nicely captured and fits the theme just fine and found the additional notes interesting and useful in giving it all context.

:agree:

Lovely set of four, Charlie. Really spot on.

Edit: You waited 100 years to make that? wow, you are a bit older than I thought!!! (but only a bit!!) :D

Thank you.
The plan is to make a nice comfy garden seat with the wood. Well some of it.
Then sit back, & relax. One day maybe:D

Great story! .....and great idea for Quad...I really love the 3rd image...and if you could just send me the item in picture no.4

Well if you care to wait a hundred years or so till the tree grows from that seed cone I will send you a table.;)

Thank you.The "flowers" on the european Larch are a bit deeper red. This was from a Hybrid. The European are not out just yet but when they are I think I might try for a few more shots.

Maybe, but with age comes wisdom.:p
So you will be about 8 then.:razz::lol:

Thanks for the comment Janice.

Careful I may hold you to that....you never know what technology will bring

I am way beyond the help of technology though. I still remember the steam engine.
