Saving files to external hard drive?

I recently bough a 1TB external hard drive and would like to use it to store RAW files.

Is there a right or wrong way to get the files onto the hard drive and then recover them into LR? I thought it would be as simple as exporting from LR to the disc and then importing from the disc back into LR to work on the files if I ever needed to.

If you intend it as a backup then that would work, if you mean as your live working copy then look into moving both images and catalogues to the drive in a structured order.

Or if you want to keep them still in Lightroom, but referenced to the external drive, just drag and drop within Lightroom.
