recenlty got a proliant server with £100 cash back

so i need 4 hard drives looking to get the from amazon ie due to family buying amazon gft cards for christmas so will be easier for me

im looking for 4x2tb hard drives to use but dont have a clue what to start looking for ie brand or spec idealy i would spend a few more quid over a cheaper one if it works quicker and more reliable

any suggestions would be great doesnt have to be amazon exactoly but more to point me in the correct direction in the past if i built a pc or needed a extra drive i would jsut buy any old hard drive

youll struggle to find one brand that gets 100% good comments to be honest, whatever one person suggests youll get another that can give you a bad review.

personally ive never had any bother with samsung drives, however you cant get them any more without paying a slight premium as they dont make them any more (samsung hard drives have folded into seagate). but i know some people on here have had issues with samsung drives.

id suggest sticking to the big 2 - WD and seagate.

a seagate 2tb 7200rpm for example for about £70 - http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2tb-...4-sata-3-6gb-s-7200rpm-64mb-cache-8ms-oem-ncq (no doubt youll get someone along shortly who slates seagate drives :D)

Never had problems with any Seagate drives or Hitachi either.

Is there any fundamental difference between the drives apart from the fact that the external drive is in a container and designed to use the USB port?

essentially its just in a plastic box with a sata to usb/firewire/thunderbolt converter.

some of the drives with usb power only may be lower power/slower rpm models (these are normally 2.5" laptop drives anyway).
 
I guess we'll all have different experiences with hard drives. I've never had a samsung fail on me so I stuck to them. Then seagate bought samsungs drive business and I've had most failures with seagate over the years.
So my microserver has a WD 2Tb green drive for data storage and will get more of the same added when needed.
 
I've been using WD HDDs since 2000 and have never had a problem
 
are there any proliant server forums? with the Netgear ready nas' the forum has lists of drives that are tried and tested to work the best. Might be worth a googly
