Sata drive wont work!!!

Guys, iv got a new Sata drive and when i plug it in the putta wont boot!! it gets almost to the splash screen but then it crashes and goes back to the beginning!

Im not sure if there has to be anything switched on or off in the bios..

Any clues guys???
 
Is the drive set up to be a master or slave... Is this going to be the primary drive or a secondary??

How are you connecting the drive. Also what make is it.

I've a LaCie 750Gb eSATA on an external card, no problems
 
Just a thought, if it's internal is it set to Slave
 
its a samsung spinpoint 1TB internal, there were no jumpers on it either!!! so not sure if it need to be told its a slave!
 
Guys, You don't set an sata drive to slave or master!
Fraggle101, what splash screen does it almost get to? before it crashes? What do you regard as the beginning?
Have you enabled sata in the bios? and if so has the boot drive order changed?

More details needed mate.

SATA don't have jumper for slave or master. Is this SATA hard drive being used as a replacement for an existing SATA hard drive that you had on your system or as an additional hard drive?

Do you have any IDE hard drives on your system?
 
No jumpers what so ever....?? oh Im stumped then mate... I am sure a brighter bod will be along soon..

Boot order is the same, and it gets to the 'Windows' screen with the progress bar then scrolls, just at the end of that it crashes..
 
its going in as an extra 'Slave' drive..

There is another IDE drive on but iv tried doing it with it disconnected..
 
I'm assuming that windows is on another drive, is sata drive recognised in the bios? if so try booting into safe mode, and seeing if the sata drive is in device manager or if there is unknown hardware, if your MB is an older model (and not Asus) you may need to install a driver for the sata drive.

Which version of Windows are you using?

Will it boot up into WIndows in Safe mode?
 
Can you go to the BIOS screen and see if the drive is seen there. Also check that your computer can support SATA 3000 drives. It may be you can only handle SATA 1500 and you'll need to add a jumper for that.

Just checked you don't need Slave/ Master with SATA as it's all down to the cabling.

Stupid question you've not put the second drive onto the primary drives cable. That way it's trying to boot to a non OS drive?
 
May not be your drive but it could be your ram thats maybe on its way out.........if you have two lots of ram swap them round and see what happens or take one out at a time to see if you have a dud..........

My MB is an MSI K8t NEO 8, Its a bit old now, about 4 years now..

Iv got windows on a SATA drive and im trying to get the new one on the secondary sata port. im sure it should just see it!!

I'll see if i can get into safe mode..
 
That is not a motherboard that I have any dealings with myself but I would be very surprised if it would support a 1TB drive without some Bios upgrade. I would suggest you check on the website of that motherboard manufacturer to check if there are any compatibility issues with that size SATA drive. Also as has already been suggested that you check on the Samsung site regarding any drivers/compatibility issues with your version of Windows.
