I had an offer come by email to replace my SatNav at a considerable saving. The new one came (TomTom)as advised, switched it on to try it out, after a little while it shut down telling me that there was no charge in the battery.
So I thought okay will charge it up, left it on charge overnight. Next morning I went to it to switch it on and there it was dead as a dodo.
Sent an email to TomTom and eventually got a reply to carry out a "soft reset", so first of all this involved switching the Sat Nav on. I had already told them that the battery was flat and it would not charge up so I could not start it up. LOL
 
i have an old sat tom tom sat nav and regularly get emails about an upgrade but the price is more than i recently paid for my new phone which is now my sat nav?

Why don't you just send it back for a refund or replacement?

Phone is sure more obvious and convenient now. Until it fails to lock signal at all, and of course it tracks you all the way even forcefully recommending some weird detours like dog home or funeral home.... Least of all it thinks it's OK to drive 35miles extra on M5 almost doubling mileage to save 1minute journey time, etc. Had all of these... I still don't think the old satnavs are the way due to expense and lack of true / free updates. I am leaning towards supplementing the phone with learning the major roads and area maps before setting off somewhere and as usual using common sense and navigation skills if things go different.

Agree, it is just much more convenient to use your mobile nowadays. I haven't used my satnav for a couple of years now and doubt I will ever go back to it.
 
what you have discovered is the little known issue with some tomtom satnavs. I have a Tomtom Rider 2 that if i leave it till it dies i have to charge up & hold the reset button whilst powered to get it to turn on. You don't mention what model satnav it is. Its something to do with how they have programmed the power management.
 
I haven’t used a TomTom in about 3 years. Download Waze, if you have a good data plan it’s much better, it has real time traffic updates, as it’s an app it’s self updating and always up to date.

(I do keep the old tomtom in the car in case I get no signal but that hasn’t happened yet)

My TomTom has real time traffic updates too.
 
I don't know why anyone would want a satnav - virtually everyone has a smartphone and have used it without fail in the US, Cyprus, Portugal as well as the UK.

Because not all of us;
A) have a high data usage phone plan
B) Like the idea of having our mobile phones on display. Easy to be mistaken for using it as a mobile.
C) See the need when we have perfectly adequate Sat Navs. Some that are actually built into the car.

you dont need a big data plan to use your phone as a sat nav, just use offline maps from google

I’m a big fan of both Apple Maps and Google Maps, but there are just some things they cannot do in navigation mode that my satnav can.

Thanks everyone for your views. @Ricardodaforce thanks for your answer that did the trick. I don't know why I did not think of that. Last week my Mac keyboard would not work so I plugged that into the power and it started up okay.
