Sarah's 52 for 2010 - Now continued in part 2

Well shot twists on the Candid theme. I've enjoyed your 52 so far and when I saw you had a Candid shot up I was wondering what kind of digital trickery you would have come up with. I was quite surprise to find some nice clean images with a little tweaking. Great work as usual.

Hi Sarah, I really like the colours on your candid shot and it fits the theme very well - they seem completely oblivious to you. However, I would have preferred the geese sharper.

The problem with wildlife shots is that, mostly, you can't set them up. You just have to work with the light and conditions that are there. The conditions are rarely perfect.

Jenny

I was expecting another still life! You have caught lovely poses with your geese - a pity they are not a bit sharper but wildlife is always hard, and you have done well under difficult conditions.

The froggies are fun, and I'm glad you didn't fall in!

Well that wasn't expected Sarah. Great shot with the geese. I'm not keen on the grass in the bottom left corner though. I love the frog in outtake 2!

As ever a slightly different take on the theme, definitely candid as they seem totaly unaware of your presence.
If I were being really picky (and I'm not) I would say lose the reeds on the left side of the frame.

Very original candid shot, has a bit of a "pervert" twist to it (and I mean that in a good way ;-) ). Sort of sneeking to see the geese grooming themselves, just the two of them while they think no one is around.

 Goose pervert! I like it.
(and last year "respect for the geese" appeared in my 52 - I see a bit of a theme developping here)

Photographs of ducks and geese are among my favourites and I particularly like the way these two are preening rather than just 'sat' on the water. I also like the frog shots - number one is my favourite with his back legs showing so clearly under water.

Thanks Liz.
Wildlife isn't my normal thing, but I did like that goose shot and I thought it was worth persevering to get something from it in PP.

Excellent take on the theme Sarah, the processing has made them look more arty than nature, but you know... I really like it.

Thanks John.
"Nature" was my original intention, but that just didn't work out so I guess "arty" was my back up.
I thought the end result was quite appealing even if it was a long way from technically great.

I would have preferred it sharper too TBH.
Maybe that's one for another theme - we'll have to see what comes out of Simon's bag.

I quite enjoyed these shots so wildlife (hopefully sharper wildlife) might appear in here again.

Well that wasn't expected Sarah. Great shot with the geese. I'm not keen on the grass in the bottom left corner though. I love the frog in outtake 2!

Thank you.
Agree with you on the grass. That's why I prefer still life - it appeals to the control freak in me ;)

Be as picky as you want to :)
And FWIW I agree with you on the reeds.

Really liking the Candid shot. Great detail, interesting subject and i like the textures in there. The water looks almost computer generated. I think the backlighting works well. Good work

Hi Sarah,

I've finally worked my way through the mass of posts and all of your great 52. To be honest there's not much I can add to what has already been said but looking at your images I've got a long way to go to get to your standard!

A few of my highlights:

The chopped jigsaw is my favourite, it's a little different from the norm which is why I like it
Street is fabulous, some amazing photography and good PP
Speed - I wish I hadn't noticed it as I was planning to do this at the weekend as a catch up for me. I know I can't do better than that so I won't even try!
People 2 is great, I have friends in Cardiff and love that area, another clever shot and great reflections
Mechanical made me smile - very clever play on words. I really like attentions to detail like that.

The only thing I'm not sure of is candid, I like the picture but I'm not sure it falls into candid for me. I can't decide if animals count!

A really great set of images, keep it up, or should I say don't keep it up. You're showing us all up!

 Chemistry is inspired!.....I like number 1 but I actually think I'm going to pick 3 as my favourite....it almost looks like they're ballet dancing ! Very nice execution :)

Great candid shot I love the soft sunlight.....nice pp

The 'arty' feel works for me and they appear to have no idea that you are there so it's certainly candid....but there again I can just imagine one saying to the other:

'Don't look now; there's another one of those toggers on yonder bank. And get this: she's only going for backlit!'

I think I would have liked there to be no grassy foreground - just geese in ripply water. And one little detail insists on catching my eye every time I look - that blimmin blade of grass obscuring the goose's tail.
But these things aren't really a problem here because they help to reinforce the unposed candid feel of the shot.

Thanks Rich. There was quite a bit of PP in this one, but glad that you liked it.

Hi Gary - thank you for the monster catch up . . . and your very kind words.
I'm the first to admit that I've still got a long way to go though - very new to this!

Glad you like the arty feel. Not what I set out to do, but sometimes you just have to work with what you get

OK - Before you scroll down ***Major Marmite and Crowbar alert***

Let me get the excuses out of the way first.
I've been really ill this weekend (flu / heavy cold), and just haven't had the energy / motivation to move from the sofa, never mind pick up the camera.
I've been having a sort through some old images on the lappy though, and seeing whether there's anything worth salvaging in Photoshop before I delete them.

So here you have something that I "produced" in Photoshop. (the crowbar bit)
It started off life as a snap of some snowy branches, but I'm not sure it's even a photograph any more  (the Marmite bit)

Love it or hate it, at least it fills the gap this week and stops me falling behind.
Anyway, enough rambling . . . here's some mad, bad Photoshop insanity.

Week 12 - Produce

Unfortunatly, its not really working for me! sorry. Like the contrast from Purple to blue though! good colours!

I like it Sarah, you're producing skills with Photoshop are excellent. Im trying to figure out what my mind is seeing, its partly thinking of a futuristic planet in a vibrant atmosphere but then the blue base says the bottom of the sea. Either way its an interesting shot that i like looking at.

Definitely crowbarred into the theme, very surreal and futuristic image. It has an 'another world' feel to it

This is very clever and there are lots of things I like about it - the colour blending, the light beams and the branches apparently enclosed in a glass bubble. Very sci-fi. However I'm not so happy with the placement of the 'bubble - it is too central (vertically, that is) for my liking, or maybe it is the nearly square format. Something is not quite working for me - but your processing is most impressive.

Hope you feel better soon.

pah!
I've been really ill this weekend (flu / heavy cold),
.. wait until you get something 1/3 as bad as "man-flu!"

As for the image - sorry I can't call it a photo anymore!

Well, you have some excellent photoshop skills. I wouldn't know where to start to get something like that so on that point... - looks very CGI / Futuristic / Another world in a galaxy far faraway, but I am not a lover of the evil brown paste in a jar!

Lynton

Hey Sarah, playing catch up :-S
Week 10 - Chemistry: great shots, nice colour, good PP and great idea, like a sun behind and the flower searching for the rays - great concept ;)

Week 11 - Candid: very funny, looks like there are just minding their business when suddenly lurking in the bushes comes a 'CLICK'

Week 12 - Produce: well tough title to start with... ...as for the shot, sorry to say although your Photoshop skills are evident, I dont get it - and as you said not even sure if it qualifies as a photo any longer.
The colour is good and would be great for a trance party flyer, but.... ...not really for me, soz ;)

Personally I think this is stunning and I'd love to do something like this but I don't even know where to begin

It is a very striking image Sarah and your photoshop skills are brilliant. However it is too far removed from a photograph for i'm afraid.

It does remind me of being underwater but then it has rays of light coming from the bottom instead of the surface.

It is certainly produced though

Andy

No need to say sorry . . . I did warn you about the Marmite ;)

How about a futuristic mini planet plummeting through a vibrant atmosphere down to the bottom of the ocean? :)
TBH I have no idea what it is . . . blame it on the temperature and the Lemsips!!!

Definitely crowbarred into the theme, very surreal and futuristic image. It has an 'another world' feel to it

Thanks Steve. Not a complete flop then?

Hmmmm . . . now that you mention it perhaps it is a bit central.
If I had the enthusiasm for it I might try relocating, but I'm not sure that I have!
I am feeling a lot better today though thanks. Why do I always seem to get these things at weekends?

As for the image - sorry I can't call it a photo anymore!

Lynton

I did warn you that the brown paste was coming along this week!
And since I wanted to work on my PP as well as my photography this year, I guess it's worked from that side of things . . . I'll replace it with a "proper" photograph at some point though.

Hi Dade and thank you for the catch up.
I don't think I've seen your thread for a while so I'll have to have a search for it.
Glad you liked Chemistry and Candid . . . and produce? meh! what can I say?
It filled the gap and I'll be reshooting this week when I get chance.

pah! .. wait until you get something 1/3 as bad as "man-flu!"

:D, agreed, its only coz us men are SO strong we survive, it would wipe out the female race!

Funnily enough, my OH keeps telling me the same thing.
Just wait until he catches it!

I will say well done on getting something up whilst ill sarah, i think its good and you did it with photoshop. Something i could never do. Well done on a well produced PS image

Thanks Jon. I know it's not going to everyone's (most people's) cup of tea - but at least it didn't involve getting up from the sofa!

Personally I think this is stunning and I'd love to do something like this but I don't even know where to begin

Thanks Darren - and I'm not sure I could do it again if I tried. I really can't remember all the steps that went into it.
Glad that somebody likes it, even if it's not particularly photographic any more!

It is a very striking image Sarah and your photoshop skills are brilliant. However it is too far removed from a photograph for i'm afraid.

It does remind me of being underwater but then it has rays of light coming from the bottom instead of the surface.

Andy

Thanks Andy. And that's one vote for it fitting the "produced" theme

I'll replace it with a "proper" photograph at some point though.
NO! LEAVE IT IN, PLEASE.

First off, Sarah - I'm sorry you're feeling so ill. People (ie men) who get man-flu have no idea at all what a cold's like for us women. I hope your OH has been keeping you supplied with the Lemsip and hot toddies.

tbh, if I'd been feeling that ill I'm quite sure my creative urges would have been dormant, so well done for all the creativity going on in this image. You're right - it probably isn't a photo, but so what! There are still people around who say it's not a photo if you use a digital camera, or tweak it in photoshop.

It's intruiging, pleasing to the eye and is full of interest. It's up there with the Marmite - and I love it!

Get well soon.

Jean

I really like your produce shot - given the explaination it is certainly on a valid intepretation of the them and although heavily processed I like the colours & the surreal fantasy-feel.

Well done!

Phil

According to my dictionary there's no crowbar required.
To be frank I had no idea what I was looking at, BUT there is a photograph in there somewhere, the colours are simply beautiful and the processing is simply mindblowing (well it blew mine). I am in awe (once again) of the PP skills some of you people have.

That's very different Sarah... I like it in an arty abstract kind of way, There is no way I'd ever have got back to it's origins though. As for crowbar... it looks more like it's been angle grinded, then smacked with a sledgehammer to fit ...

Sarah, first off, thanks for the heads up on last weeks theme, it was much appreciated. I don't think this is a crowbar job, there is a photograph in there and you produced the final image. FWIW, I think it fits the theme. I love the processing you have done on this, the colours are vibrant, the whole image has a surreal, futuristic feel to it. I like marmite. Well done on this even though you were ill with a bit of bird flu:D I am with Lynton, if it was man flu, that is a near death experience where it is impossible to function;) Iain

Hmmm...I'm a little undecided Sarah.

I think I can make out a tree in the two globes. I like the 'rays of light'.

Maybe the 'product' of a medicated mind (in a lemsip kind of way!) :D

Hope you're feeling better.

Hi Sarah, hope you are feeling better soon. I really like this. It's not very photographic, but very pleasing to the eye. I love the colours and it is so weird that I spent some time trying to puzzle out what it was. Still none the wiser. Well done for "producing" something.

Jenny

My word - you certainly have produced that haven't you!

It's a good artistic effort, the colours are pleasing to me and overall I like what you've done

And who cares if it's a crowbar :whistling:

Thanks Jean. That's another  for Marmite.
Hopefully I'll be back on form for this weekend.

As for reshooting, it's on the list but not quite up there with chopped and people . . . which despite any intentions probably means that I won't get around to it!

I really like your produce shot - given the explaination it is certainly on a valid intepretation of the them and although heavily processed I like the colours & the surreal fantasy-feel.

Thanks Phil. I'm glad that you like it.

 Just never ask me how I did it - because I really have no idea!

Yep . . . Extreme crowbarring in action this week!

Thanks Iain and you're welcome re: last week's theme.
And of course you're right - it can't possibly have been man flu or I wouldn't have even had the strength to move the mouse.

Hmmm...I'm a little undecided Sarah.

I think I can make out a tree in the two globes. I like the 'rays of light'.

Maybe the 'product' of a medicated mind (in a lemsip kind of way!) :D

Thank you. I'm sure I'll be fine by next weekend . . . and if you're ever acking creativity I can recommend the Lemsip solution!

Thanks Jenny and you're right it's definitely "produced".
I'm glad that you find it pleasing though - even if it's in a non photographic way!

My word - you certainly have produced that haven't you!

It's a good artistic effort, the colours are pleasing to me and overall I like what you've done

Thanks Nick.
I think every 52 needs at least one crowbar in it

Don't be.
I'm tough enough to take it and I did warn you about the Marmite ;)

(I just wish a full week of man flu on you in return :p)

Love it Sarah! Very creative - I'm impressed - I wouldn't have a clue where to start to produce something like this...well done! :notworthy:

Thanks Dave.
And as for producing it, I don't think I'd have a clue where to start if I had to do it over again.

I can't quite work out if I like the 'produce' shot or not! It's certainly different, I think I do but I'm not sure why!

Good stuff getting on with it despite illness, get well soon

I have no idea what I'm looking at, and I don't see even the smallest idea of a branch, but that being said, I love this picture. It's something I could look at for hours. Looks like I could hang it over my desk and look at it all day long. Not sure I would get any work done though!!! :D

Am impressed by the PS'ing as well8 Real great to look at!
