Heres my entry for 'play'
I was cursing Peter last night for having put me into the 52, sometimes I just can't get whats in my head into a pic! So again I'm putting one in that I'm not fully happy with (I really am my worse critic) but I've run out of time to take another one this week!
I'm going to the Pantomime tomorrow and had thought about trying to get a shot there but then reminded myself that I am going with nearly 300 children so might be a little to busy to take photos!:eek:
I have ended up doing a Triptych of one of our favourite games Mancala! We often play this game when we're away in the caravan and it's one game I can occasionally win!:)

Like it. Lovely colours, well composed and good detail.

Crit, I feel in the upper section if the lower right, the buttons are a little too OOF compared the the others.

Very one of my ideas has been done by someone else....and on Friday we're going to the pantomime and I thought you where going to beat me to the idea :)

Thanks Andy! I agree about the OOF on the bottom right its one of the things that bugs me on it as well, I was going to use the bottom right as a stand alone but Peter suggested a triptych and these were the best to fit together! Enjoy the pantomime on Friday, we're going to the Alhambra in Bradford but if its like last year I spent more time taking the kids to the toilet than watching it!!
 
Nice and bright and not a blown out highlight in sight :D I find shiny things really hard to take photos of because of this. Agree with the DOF on the bottom right one - but that would be my only niggle.
 
Great image Sarah (y), I like the fact that each image shows a different dof, very appealing :)
 
I do agree that Triptychs need to be planned, and shots taken as such, trying to fashion one together afterwards doesn't always work.

As three individual shots, they all work really well, super detail and unusual but appealing crop on the first, the facelike character of the left, and the beautiful OOF rear and bokeh on the right one.

Great precision in lining up all the horizontals too.

Odd, love the DOF on the, the wool really adds texture.
Line, lovely contrast with great sharpness throughout. I think the mono conversion has disguised the bland sky! Great lead in lines though, I would maybe take a step left to get the bit in the middle, in the middle, if that makes sense! But hey, I'm no landscape expert!
Play, I've never heard of this game before. I think the triptych works well but the image bottom right dominates because of the very shallow DOF, maybe a bit more needed there. As for the triptych itself, have you tried using drop shadows around each individual photo? Just a tiny bit can add a lot of depth! Not sure if you've been on FB today but I posted a photo of my friend wake boarding, 8 shots in a collage, I spent hours fiddling with drop shadows and strokes to give it that extra oomph! Not sure if it works but I liked it!!!

Anyhow it's good to see you guys back in for another year, and maybe we can meet up again when I'm back over later this year.
 
I like the colours and the triptych approach. I'm not so keen on the largish white borders but I do quite like the different DOF.
 
Hi Sarah, I think it works really well as someone else said the different DoF Doesn't distract at all, nicely lit, and the colours are great
Never heard of the game and at least it makes a change from scrabble (y)
 
Good colours and lighting. Contrast between the wood and glass works well. Like the gallery format as well.
 
Good entry for Play theme - very colourful. I quite like the triptych idea, but I also like the bottom left image on its own.

Thanks Sarah, shiny things are difficult to photograph- I find using a bit of black card can help cut out some of the reflections!

Hi Marsha, it would be great to meet up when you come over! I'm glad I've been pushed:) back into the 52 as I learnt so much last time ad hope to learn as much again!

You are certainly off to a great start, I really like the composition and leading lines of your line image, maybe a revisit in better weather to really make it pop?
Play, bang on theme, like the triptych, the vivid colours of the marbles and the overall feel to the image. Maybe the borders a little smaller but apart from that (y)

Thank you Allan, I think the bottom right is bit of a Marmite one!!:) If you get chance its worth looking out for Mancala, its a good maths strategy game!

Thanks Iain, its good to be back!! Its only my 3rd triptych the last one was last time I did the 52, I think I need to practice more to get used to changing borders etc!:)

Thank you Diane, the bottom right was going to be my entry until Peter (Delta Skies) mentioned trying a triptych!
 
  • number 1 i am not keen on the little characters look cheap to me given the poor detail in there faces sorry.
  • number 2 i like very close indeed plenty of detail and nice composition.
  • number 3 is the best for me i like the composition, i love the colour it's superb.

No2 looks very noisy to me.......but that could just be me :thinking:

No3 good colour and focus (y)

So.........no1 for me :)
 
I like number one for the play on words, close up, close knit background and the family. Yes they don't look the greatest quality but anything shot close up has a tendency to look a bit dodgy because certain details aren't usually visible to the human eye! Macro highlights everything.

Number two is lovely with the heart shape in the middle.

Number three is the winner for me though, lovely soft tones and great composition :clap:

Thank you for stopping by Mandy, the man standing up is only 2cm tall (they're made for model railways) and aren't really designed for close up detail unfortunately!

Thanks Phil, #2 is a little noisy but I was so taken by the heart shaped center I cropped it heavily hence the noise!
#1 I was trying to think of something original when close knit family came to mind, it was good to get my knitting out again!!

Thank you Marsha, #3 is my favourite as well, I wasn't too sure how #1 would go down as the figures are so tiny and lacking detail (and kept falling down!) but I do love macro work!:)

Play - I like the idea, the colours are nice too. If I'm being really picky, the focus in the top image looks a little out.
Close - I think #2 and #3 have more potential than #1, but to me they both look underexposed and I think the lighting need tweaking. You've got Exif turned off so I can't tell if you used a flashgun and what your settings were.

Hi, thanks for pointing out about Exif I've switched it back on now! No flash was used, they were taken using very little natural light!
