weekly *Sarah* 2012 52 week challenge. Yippee I made it!!

Hi Sarah

Haven't spotted your thread before but will definitely follow it from now.... found it very inspiring I have to say.

Have to say I really like this last one - can you tell/show how you did it please, also what shutter speed etc?

many thanks

Hazel

looks perfect to me too - I thought of this but didn't dare try it - imagine the mess! love it

On phone, but another cracker. I like the flow of the wine and the colour is great. Nice and translucent.

Nice detail throughout.

Have you got any with the wine swishing over the edge of the glass?

Must try this myself.

Cheers.

"...far from perfect..."
Looks pretty darn good to me!

Your having a laugh woman

That is a great shot, good bright colours, a clear background and a perfect composition, and the lighting - spot on  from me

You are both too kind, thank you! It was a rush job and my heart hasn't really been in it recently and I cut corners. Because I cut corners I can see where it's not right and its niggling away at me - def a reshoot one and a good excuse to get some more wine!!:)

Hi Hazel, thank you for popping by.:)

It was taken at 160 at f18. Its quite a simple set using one softbox behind the glass (this makes the background), I cut corners when taking this one and I'm not fully happy with it - I've tried to post a link to Garry from Lencarta who shows you how to do it properly but for some reason its not working. Have a look on google I expect theres tons on there as well - it's called brightfield lighting. If you havent got a soft box I've taken similar shots by shooting a speedlight onto a white background (in my case a piece of card) which then bounces back through the glass.

It's best to do it in a dark room as well as any light causes reflections in the glass. If you go on to my flickr and look for straight I have a picture of a similar set up on there as well.

I hope this helps, have a go and get back to me if I can help again!:)

Thank you for your comments. A little escaped but luckily stayed on the table! there is a particular shot I would like to take but it will be messy and would prob have to take it outside, I will not be brave enough to try that one in the lounge!!:lol:

Hi Sarah

That's a very good shot. Very clear, colourful, dynamic. You rarely fail when you get the wine glasses out :D

Thanks for the explanation of method also. But how did you trigger the shot whilst pouring?

Thanks Alan,

As for pouring I got my son to assist for that, the cable release I've got is quite long but the problem I had was not being able to see where the bottle was in the frame so luckily Thomas came to the rescue!!:):)

Hi Sarah
Another fantastic piece of work from you. A bright, clean image which has captured the movement and flow of the wine. You've handled the reflections from all three components of the photograph well. The wine, glass and bottle all being shiny must present difficult lighting issues?
Crit? I am being reeaaalllly picky here, please forgive me but it just needs a little CCW rotation IMHO. Good work, really good work. Iain

You've caught the motion of the wine spot on with just the right amount in the glass. For me I like the richness of the red wine against the starkness of the white background. Well done.

Thanks ever so much for this Sarah - I really appreciate it!

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I have to say that because when this theme was posted I very nearly said 'oh I can see Sarah now with her glass of wine flowing shot' Not that you're predictable or anything

I've looked long and hard and I can't possibly see how you can improve on this:clap:

Great shot. Did it take more than one attempt to get the shot you wanted?

I missed you picture for flow Sarah. Really like it, cracking colour and movement in the drink. Good lighting and composition.

Thank you Bob and Michael,

I took 3 shots of the glass empty to get the exposure right and 6 more to get the right flow.:)

Hi Marsha,

Predictable is my middle name!!:lol::lol:

I think thats where I went wrong trying to think of something different, should have gone for wine glasses straight away! Don't think glasses will fit into this weeks theme though!

The main thing that I'm not happy is that because I rushed and cut corners the top right side of the glass is not defined correctly. I should of held some black card up at the sides and top which makes the glass stand out. Next time I'll take a with and without black card shot and you'll see what a difference it can make!:)

I've looked again after reading what you said about the black card, I can see the top of the glass, all looks good to me :)

Well I think I've spent all day thinking about attempting something like this! The weather certainly hasn't been good enough to brave going outside with my camera!!!

really good pic can't add anything to what others have said except

After alot of scratching heads this weekend a couple of ideas finally appeared in my head today!:) I've gone for an easier option and decided to shoot a yellow rose which means "friendship!"
I haven't been able to spend as much time on it as usual as I have a very busy week. It was taken using white card for the background and one speedlight off camera.

200iso 1/200sec at f16 using 100mm macro. The rose is a tiny rose only a couple of cm's!:)

The white background looked a bit too harsh so I have given it a slight tint.

I have to apologise for not getting to your themes this week but now I have mine done I will try to catch up tomorrow!:)

Yellow rose, nice interpretation. Nice yellow on the flower. Good detail and depth. Although you might not want to trim the rose, I'd prefer it if the pointed green parts sticking up were removed. BG looks a tag grey.

Matching yellows, rose and text would be good. Can't help having the text suggests you feel viewers won't get the connection

Cheers.

Morning!

Thank you for your comments.

I left the green bits in as they added another colour and they don't really bother me enough to warrant cutting them off.

You had me worried about the background and I've been back on to check it is a very pale blue def not grey and as I explained in the explanation the white background was too harsh!:)

As for adding text it's not everyones cup of tea but I have been critised previously for an image not being clear on theme, so in this case I thought adding text would explain. I didn't know that a yellow rose is for friendship until searching on google!:)

Nice shot of rose on theme for me even without the text as giving roses is an act of friendship for my OH. Looked up the google as you did and lots of clues for future themes on emotions!

The top left green piece bothers me only a little only because it looks so large relative to the other two.

Good detail on the rose. B/g is pale blue on my monitor.

It is a quandary....do you remove part of a flower to 'improve' it? I have to say, I have in the past :)

Looked again and the BG is, indeed, pale blue.

I've been pulled in the past when people can't see the connection, have to say, sometimes I do think...."you need to work s bit harder and figure it out"

Cheers.

Not sure the pale blue bg works maybe something a bit darker? I don't think you need the writing either, if people need an explanation then you could just put it in a reply. good thinking about the theme though.

Hi Sarah,

Flow is great, and perfect just the way it is.

Friendship - I prefer the white background but don't mind the text. The shadows spoil it a little for me. Did you shoot any at a larger aperture? I think for me personally, this would have looked better with less DoF.

I prefer the white BG as there seems to be less halo around the stem - optical illusion no doubt. I didn't mind having text with it, but I did think the text looked a bit plain (next to such a beautiful flower). Although I don't mind the DoF, like Nathalie I would like to see more in focus. Still a beautiful image though

I liked the original version as one of those fridge magnets type images and certainly the background tint suited it well. As a single rose as per the edit I like the white background so a winner on both fronts.

Hi Ya

Flow......what precisley aren't you happy with ??? Looks pretty darn good on my screen....great color in the wine , sharp throughout ...top shot

& as for your Friendship image.....the edited version is simply perfect....white BG works much better for me as it emphasises just how well you've caught the yellow color , beautifully sharp
I quite like the version witht he writing , would work as a card but dislike the BG color on that shot

Hi Sarah,
I will throw my views in FWIW, I prefer the second version without the text. I found the text a little distracting but see where you are coming from with the explanation. I must admit, I didn't know about the link with friendship and yellow roses but every day is a school day as they say ;)
The photograph is technically very good IMHO, I particularly like the crisp colours and the lighting is well balanced. Iain

Just watched a B&H video on YouTube, highly recommended channel, and to paraphrase a quote, " a good photograph needs no explanation". Sometimes viewers have to work harder to 'get' the message, same applies to paintings, sculpture, poetry, dance, and more. Feel like I'm ranting....just my rumnations and, to continue the rant :) how boring would it be if everyone said straight away, on viewing a photograph, "yeah, I see where you're coming from".

The end.....

Thank you all for your comments!

Lesson learnt from last week - keep to white/black backgrounds:)
don't put lettering onto photos!

Anyway onwards and upwards!:)
