It's belongs to someone I know. They have and old film of their granddaughter when she was little on there (a party of hers). I have tried playing the tape on the tank size recorder but can not get any joy.

From what I can find out on the internet it sounds like the heads need cleaning.

So this is my question.

Does anyone live in the Kent area (Gravesend / Dartford) that has a machine that can play a 8mm video tape? If so would you be able to help me out? If I can get it to play on a tv I'll just record the tv. Not perfect but it will make an old boy very happy.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave, have you tried cleaning the heads? A couple of drops of isopropyl on a cotton bud should do it.

I haven't got any isopropyl. I have Jack Daniels or WD40 though :)

WD40 Like duct tape resolves a lot of the worlds ills,
but in this instance I'm not really convinced that either is a good idea.
Maybe some neat alcohol certainly nothing greasy that's for sure,
or you'll be back to square one.

(I'm not sure if JD would fall into that catagory or not :D)

What is the 'tank size recorder' you are using?

Same as this...

In my tool box I have duct tape, wd40 and a hammer. If one of those 3 don't fix it then it's broken for good ;)

I have Vodka????
Drink it!
Check the wife's toolbox, Nail polish remover might work? Not sure.
Cotton buds can leave little bits of cotton inside the machine though.
The safest option might be to buy a proper head cleaning tape.
Does it play at all? Any image? If it's dirty heads, it should still play, but the picture would be "noisy"
There's a place in dartford that can transfer to dvd.

I'm wondering if there is a digital / analogue question going on here?

If you can see the head you should be able to tell if it's dirty by the mucky brown streaks on it but if it's not showing any image at all the problem is likely to be elsewhere. If it's dirty then use a slightly damp kitchen roll or clean cloth, wipe it over and dry it off.

Thanks for the link Robert. I'll tell him about that if I can't get this thing to work.

The heads seems to be clean.

Through the viewfinder in playback mode or record mode there is only a white screen with black bars flickering.
