SanFran air crash

oh...

lack of links makes it a tad bland dick,

There was a tweet from a passenger who was onboard that flight before the news even had it
The instagram pictures followed in seconds :D

Clearly not a reliable witness

Witnesses rarely are reliable. But bare in mind he may have seen the horizontal stabiliser come off, which along with the vertical tail has.
What's worrying though, is where is the port engine??????????

Another witness said that the plane landed upside down ! Probably a conclusion mistakenly reached because the tailplane and fin had gone.

The debris trail starts way back at the water's edge (well short of the runway) where contact was made with a wall or breakwater. The aircraft was right of the runway at that point, but should have been lined up.
Looking at the fire damage it is extremely fortunate that there are so many survivors.

If it's the same witness I heard being interviewed, he said cartwheeled, then went on the explain he didn't mean nose over tail, he meant horizontally. Unfortunately news organisations do tend to either be selective or deliberately misquote.
Anyway, yes, I saw the debris trail, and what I concluded was a body on the runway last night (you don't cover debris with sheets). It's fairly clear what happened, why is a whole other story though.

I read that the two folk who were killed fell out of the broken end of the fuselage.
You mentioned the missing port engine, Bernie. There is a picture on Pprune showing it. It is well ahead of the aircraft. Possibly shot/rolled forward.
There is a lot of reading on Pprune about it (reams of it) www.pprune.org - Rumours & News forum

Regarding PPrune, a number of pilots there are reporting that ILS and glide scope was not in operation at SFO R28L, and a few of them are suggesting that potentially the PAPI could have also not been functioning based on their experiences in the last week or so.

If so this would have left the pilots with nothing more than an air speed indicator, altimeter, and a window to get the aircraft down. Back in the days before glass cockpits this wouldn't have been a problem, but pilot's job these days is more about systems management rather than actually flying.

I suspect a screwed up visual approach in an aircraft where the pilot basically never has to do a visual approach.

There are some worrying things being posted on that website (as there always are after accidents). Worth bearing in mind that it all awaits verification:thumbs:

As always.

Yes, I've now seen where it is. Bit like the TK at AMS, engine carried on although the rest had stopped.

Anyway, Pprune is full of armchair experts, most of whom have never investigated anything more complicated than their pay packets.

The simple fact is, it obviously hit the breakwater, for want of something better to call it, but the why etc is all speculation on there, and will remain so until the intrim report is publish at least, possibly until the full report comes out.

A quick read of the thread after the BA 777 ended up a bit of a mess on 27L at LHR shows the flights of fantasy that some on pprune take. The most amusing one was the crash was caused by some form of anti IED device on the PM's car!

Awful disaster.
Lynton, next time try google....it's quite good.

The warning that Pprune display is worth heeding:-

"As these are anonymous forums the origins of the contributions may be opposite to what may be apparent. In fact the press may use it, or the unscrupulous, or sciolists*, to elicit certain reactions.

*"sciolist"... Noun, archaic. "a person who pretends to be knowledgeable and well informed".

It always struck me that for people who are/claim to be professional pilots they seem to very easily erupt into behaviour that is not as calm as one would hope an airman would be. Perhaps fewer true pilots on that website as it appears.

Fair glad I wasn't on that flight!

I'm still going to retire to SF, so no worries here!

On a serious note, it's always horrible when death and injury occurs in circumstances like this. Having lost somebody very close to me on the Piper Alpha disaster, I know how it feels to suffer the shock, horror, pain and hurt when a human life is taken from this world quickly, unexpectedly in such a tragic manner.

More video now available via cnn of the actual crash, plus on sky news of the immediate aftermath of people evacuating the plane. Some tales of courage of some flight attendants helping people out (as they should)

If this is true it"s the biggest tragedy in the whole crash

to survive then get killed by a fire engine

14. The San Francisco Fire Department said one of the victims killed may have been struck by an emergency vehicle, San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said. Asiana has identified the two deceased passengers as Ye Mengyuan and Wang Linjia of China. Both were 16.

What we don't know: Which teen girl may have been struck by an emergency vehicle? And did the girl die from the plane crash or from the vehicle? Foucrault said his office is trying to determine the cause of death.

surely these international airports have CCTV covering the runways

ATC can see the runways from the tower.
But I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. If it's that somehow CCTV could/should have warned of the presence of a person laying on the ground, thats an unlikely possibility. We had a feed from the BAA's CCTV into ourt Control room at Heathrow, the quality was naff. Certainly not good enough to make out a recumbent body.
I'm afraid if the girl was indeed killed by the AFS, not the crash, as tragic as it is, it will happen in that sort of circumstances. The vehicle crew are looking for fires, and the best place for their vehicle to be, not at the ground.

Sorry I didn't make that point clear, I meant CCTV filming the runways so when there is a crash landing they can see exactly what happened

that is the most precariously balanced tv i've ever seen :)

Funny, saw a different clip last night on liveleak....

"A KTVU anchor later apologized for the error. She said that the names
were inaccurate in spite of the fact that a National Transpiration
Safety Board spokesperson confirming them. "

Awesome news channel fail...

There is another link now, including the TV anchor actually reading the names out. How on earth could anyone not take one look and start to question it?
