SanDisk SD Card - Formatting Problem?

Hi Guys
Recently ordered a 2GB SanDisk SD ExtremeIII card from Amazon for my Canon G7. Card arrived and I popped it into camera and took a few shots to experiment.
Stuck card into my card reader and plugged into PC USB. Auotoplay did not fire up so I was a bit suspicious. Navigated to card reader in "Computer" and tried to access pics. Received Windows message that card required formatting before it could be accessed.
Was a bit puzzled as I had read somewhere that all SanDisk cards come pre-formatted.
Did not proceed with PC formatting but replaced card in camera and selected the "in camera" format option. This done I took a few more pics and again tried to view them on the PC. Got the same problem - disk coming up as unformatted. This time selected the option to format in PC but got an error message saying Windows could not complete the format???
Just for assurance I got an older basic SanDisk card - formatted that in camera and took a few pics. Popped it into card reader and Hey Presto off it went as normal and the pics were accessed without problem.

Do I have a duff 2GB card or is something else wrong? Is there an issue with my card reader? It is a Hama USB 2.0 "8 in 1" reader which I have used successfully for several years. Is it up to the job of handling these 2GB Extreme cards? It has worked OK on smaller capacity cards (up to 1GB) made by both SanDisk and Kingston.

Any comments and help would be appreciated.

Is it a SDHC card?

Hi Admirable

Packaging states "SanDisk Extreme III SD Card 2GB" I do not see reference to "HC" anywhere so I don't think it is of the HC type. Have just revisited the Amazon advert and it is definitely described as an SD rather than SDHC card.

HC just stands for High Capacity, 2gb isn't a HC card, think it's 4gb (poss 8gb) upwards thats classed as HC.

I've had this hapen once, just ignored it, re-inserted the card and no problems -> could just be windows throwing a dicky

I just bought a 4gb Sandisk SDHC card as the second card for my 1D3.
I had quite an old Sandisk card reader which couldn't read SDHC cards.

I mention this because connecting the camera direct to a USB port worked and might be an option you may want to try.

I'm not sure about the G3, but on the 1d3 there is an option to perform an additional Low Level Format.
You may want to investigate this option either on-camera or at the PC, then do a normal on-camera format.

Hi All

Just tried accessing pics on the SanDisk card directly by attaching camera to PC with USB connector. Once G7 driver had loaded, I was able to access pics on the disk without any problem.

Looks like my trusty old Hama card reader has met its match finally. Have ordered a new SanDisk reader (only £5 so no great risk involved) and will proceed using that in future.

Thanks to all who commented.
