SanDisk has today announced its new Extreme IV CompactFlash cards and the Extreme Firewire 800/400 reader. These new cards will be available in 2, 4 and 8 GB capacities and are rated as delivering 'minimum read and write speeds' of 40 MB/sec. They are also designed to be able to withstand extremes of temperature from -25°C (-13°F) to 85°C (185°F), which will be good news for anyone in the UK at the moment.

Hope it helps

They look really quick - wonder how easy it will be to find stockists of the things though.

Thanks for the news flash DaveyUK :)

All bar pro bodies aren't going to see any speed advantage from them, though...
And if you just want the increased working temps, then get some Extreme III's!

Although I'd wager the body would konk out long before the cards at those temps!

The good news is the price of extreme III cards will drop now.

Is there a camera there that can benifit from the extra speed though and although some gearheads will no doubt dive in will it make that much difference to most of our photography if we do buy these?

rule of thumb :
pro body - yes, speed increase
consumer body - no difference from Ultra II's

However, for a more firm comparison check out this database with your camera. Not updated to reflect Extreme IV's yet, but will be.

I was thinking more along the lines the speed increase affecting the time necessary for d/loading the pics being quicker as opposed to taking them.

Hate waiting for them to copy across to my PC or PortableHD after a day out:bang:

:)

Ah right, fair enough - can't comment on that... But it only takes a moment to wipe clear a 1GB CF, I find...

The Kingston Cards I was issued deffo don't like this heat.
Lucky I bought a couple of 2GB Sandisk Extreme IIIs before we left. Only £80 each now... Gleaming...

Bah..

Give them another year and we'll be on the:

Sandisk Uber Super-de-Duper Extreme IVIXXIVIVI eleet CF card!

Only canon and nikon how pants :shake:

I like the look of these, they seem to offer about 500kb/s writespeed increase over both the Extreme III and Ultra IIs, ive currently got 3x 4gb Ultra IIs, and ive had a few occasions where ive missed a shot or two due to a full buffer.

From the Rob Galbraith figures id be better off with 2gb cards for max speed, but 4gb are so much more convienent. Hard descision, i keep meaning to get a few 2gb UltraII SD cards they appear quite a bit faster then CF in the 1dmkII.
