Yes
Where do you get your sand bags from? Nothing on eBay from what I can see. I want to buy a few for my lighting stands for when I'm working outside.

Now I dont condone this behaviour, however the local council do leave them lying around draped over triangular metal tressels from time to time on the highways and byways.

Hehe :p
Seriously B&Q. Small bag of sand or cement for about a quid. Shove it in a couple of those sturdy bags from sainsburys and it works just as well

quite a lot of people get ankle weights from sports and soccer type places.... a decent weight, and they have velcro etc in the right places to velcro them around your legs, so that you can just pop them round one beam of your light stand. Could be pretty good, and won't have the hideous markup of anything with the word 'photo' in...

I just carry a climbing crab or two in my bag, and hook my bag to the bottom of the stand if shooting outside with brollies or whatever, does the job. Either that, or you can usually 'find' a brick or a chair or something...

reckoning they come as bags and you fill em with dirt/gravel/whatever

I want some of the ones you can fill with water when you get there and drain again for when I have the kit on my back but I haven't seen any for a while

Just get some ankle weights. the keep fit variety! Sainsburys are selling them for £8 for 1kg ones I think.

I couldn't find any in B&Q. Does anyone know where you can get them online so you can put your own sand in them?

tesco do 2 bags of clean play sand for £4. think about 10kg in each.

I managed to procure some old cash bags that were being chucked out. (PO) I filled some strong polythene bags with sand, sealed them, then put them in the cash bags and sewed them up! This way you can make them any size/weight you want. Total cost? 0.00! the next time I will attach some loops and usr the Krabs idea from itsdavedotnet! Cheers!

nb; i mean the cloth bags, not the small poly bags!

I had the same trouble finding sandbags!

Managed to find empty bags, but how on earth do you get them closed and stop any type of spillage? Without some industrial sewing machine, of course :)

Gave up in the end, bought a bigger stand and kept the legs out as wide as possible. Worked a treat so far :)

If anyone knows where to buy some proper sand bags please let me know.

Why use sandbags. Especially if its for location work. Use plastic milk bottles with either sand or water. Obviously sand is heavier so a litre volume should give approx 1.5kg weight, whereas water will just be 1 kg. The obvious advantage of water is you can fill it up or empty it at will. Waterfall shoot near a stream fill it up when you get there. Any shoot empty it out and you dont have to carry the weight back home.

Try your local council or water board, both use sandbags for flooding, they should know where to get some from, if you try the local yard you'll prebably be able to scrounge a few.

Sandbags are filthy. The sand doesn't stay in them, they string based ones rot and the nylon ones are better but still sand gets out. The suggestion of water bottles is a good one. You can buy camping water containers which collapse fairly flat, but when you fill them up they stretch.

would gravel not work just as well and hot suffer from spillage??
