hello all
so today is payday and i have been looking at new lenses, its come down to a toss up between the samyang 8mm or the 14mm
now both look pretty impressive but was just wondering if anyone can share any knowledge or experiences with either?
thankyou in advance joel

I've got both of them, what exactly do you want to know?

the lack of autofocus doesnt really bother me, well ive seen plenty on the 8mm but not so much on the 14mm so just wanted to know what the picture quality is like and how they're to live with. but i had heard that the 14mm would be more like 22mm on my camera so not so sure now.
any examples or opinions would be great though.
joel

14mm has superb image qulity - razor sharp corner to corner even wide open, in fact resolution doesn't change much when you stop down, MTF curve is almost flat. CA are almost non-existent. The only issue is distortion, but it's not noticable most of the time and when it is it's pretty easy to fix in PP.

Yes, on crop you'll get about 22mm equivalent, which is what I get on my 50D. Is it enough for me? Yes, in 90% of cases. If I need to go crazy wide I reach for 8mm fisheye, however being a fisheye it requires some time learing how to handle it.

Both are superb lenses, and I don't know which one I like better. I bought the fisheye first and then the 14mm.

Also note, that 14mm is FF compatible and 8mm is NOT, unless you shave the hood off in which case you'll get an almost circular fisheye on FF.

Will try and post some pics in the evening.

thanks for the reply and all the info, proving very helpful although making it very hard to choose from, but i feel im swaying towards the 14mm, sorry for all the questions but i heard there is some sort of software to correct the distortion do you know anything about this?

You can corrent in Lightroom. But PTLens is much better at this

i only have elements 8.0 is it possible on that one? sorry i know very little about photoshop and pp

It should be possible, try "lens distortion" filter

Interesting comments, I'd read that the 14mm is fisheye on full frame, and that its soft wide open when compared to Canon, Nikon, and Sigma of the same (or nearest) focal distance.

It's not a fisheye and it totaly beats any other lens in terms of resolution straight from F2.8, except probably Nikon 12-24

See formal test with full size sample images here http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/532-samyang14f28eosff

People who say it's soft probably tested non-UMC version which went out in limited quantity and was real crap.

aah yes ive had a look, looks possible thankyou. now it comes down to choosing one, im sure i want a wide angle now but just not sure if 22mm is wide enough, thankyou for your help

Go to nearest camera store and try any wideangle zoom, like canon 10-20. Set it to 14mm and see if it's enough for you. If not, just by the canon 10-20 or tokina 11-16 (this would be my preference) or sigma 10-22. They are much more expencive though.

Also note, that samyang doesn't accept filters which is a bit frustraiting sometimes when shooting landscapes.
