Looking at getting one for my 21st birthday, just not 100% I should go for this or a normal wide angle lens.

I shoot cars mostly and i take my camera travelling many different countries.

Budget is circa £220.

Anyone have any pictures taken with the samyang or anything they'd like to add about it or about the subject of wide angles?

I just don't know what to do, I want it, and love fish eye lenses but don't want it to sit on the shelf all the time.
 
It's a great lens for £200 imo

I guess it's an effect that can wear thin but I really like it - I possibly use the ultra wide angle 17-40 (on full frame) more often though. To get as wide as that on a crop body you would need something like the Canon 10-22 or Tokina 11-16. A friend has the Tokina for his Nikon and it's very sharp indeed.

They're really impressive Graham, where they done using your 5D? Or have you got any done using your 5D if not?

I've been toying with the idea of getting one but put off as i really wanted a ff one.

If you shoot cars then it's not worth it neither is a wide angle as they just distort to much.
 
It's a damned good little lens for the money and it will work on full frame but it'll leave a black 'rectangle' around the edge of the image... If you want to mess with fisheye images without worrying about having an expensive bit of glass sitting in your bag, this is a brilliant solution. :)

It definitely works better on a crop body though.



It's a fun lens to point at anything... Including cars! ;)
 
I think it's a great fun/creative lens - but as with all these lenses it will suffer from CA's & flare;

All apart from the BMX shot were taken on the 5D. You get about 8mp after cropping I think but of course you'd get more on a 5D II.
 
My friend used this lens on his nikon d90 and it worked very well!

All manual though which was something to play around with.
 
Wow, looks like great fun.

To the person that said no to car photography with it, I see where you are coming from in regards to distorting the car but I wouldn't shoot solely with this lens, I have a tamron 17-50mm f2.8 for walk about and shooting cars.

I'd use the fish eye for cool effects or in car shoots etc...

Going to go for it, but what are CA's and flares?

CA is Chromatic Aberration, often seen in the form of purple or orange colour fringing on objects in the image.

Flare, is light entering the lens and reflecting of the elements within the lens to create sometime good sometimes not so good patterns of over or increased exposure in the image.. . .

now have to hope my explanations are correct, well thats how I have come to understand those terms hope it helps :)
 
I recently bought myself the canon version of the lens, I use it on a 550d or a 40d and it is great fun, here's a couple of pics that I have access to from work.

It is a fantastic lens and I use it for both creative car photography and for much more.
You can also, quite easily being a fish-eye with a near-"stereographic" projection, remove the distortion for verticals (and avoid them for horizontals by being careful when shooting) as shown below:
