Should not be but looking to get a new lens purely for landscapes for my canon 5D mrk 1, was wondering what the samyang 35mm 1.4 would be like compared to say canon's 17-40 f4 or 24-105, I am not interested in using it at 1.4 just considering it for landscape work and thought a cheap prime might be a good start. Tried with a 50 1.8 and it was rubbish, I don't mind the manual focus etc just want to know if it's any good for landscapes, and sample images would be great, and one final point is I don't care about the other too be able to zoom I prefer to shoot by adjusting myself and taking my time, thanks.

I find that 24mm is just on the border for being too long for landscapes, i would really like to be able to go wider. Using your feet is ok for zooming but when you have something in the foreground that you want to include in the shot you would need to go wide.

I've had this debate with myself this week.
I love landscape but couldn't afford a 17-40L to be sat in my bag.
I have the 24-70L but even on FF I want wider to be honest!

I read a lot of reviews on various cheap WA lenses and it came down to

Sigma 17-35
Tamron 17-35
Canon 20-35

But then I read up on the tamron 19-35 and it actually got really good reviews, so I bagged one of those about an hour ago for £80... I'll let you know how it is!

On consideration which was a must have for me was a 77mm filter as I'm not springing for a second Lee adapter :-D

Thanks for the replies would love to hear back on what you think about your new lens.

The 19-35mm (I think they were badged by a few different manufacturers) has quite a following and I've seen some nice shots taken with them but some wont even consider them as they're cheap and plastic and not an L lens etc... .

I looked for one a few years ago but I couldn't find one at the time and I ended up getting a Canon 20-35mm which cost me £150 from Ffordes. I've read reports of distortion with this lens but I've not noticed anything too bad.

Yeah that's exactly why I went for it over any of the 17-35... Plus I'm not an L whore :-D

The 20-35 are readily available, but yes I'd heard the same about the distortion, cool that you've not noticed it... Could be a great option for the OP

The reason I got it was that I could use it on my 35mm flim body and my digital stuff without worry although I haven't read any reports of the 19-35mm not working on digital.

One thing in favour of the 20-35mm is that it has USM. I'm a big fan of USM as you can tweak the focus even in AF. One thing against it is that the hood is extra, and massive.

Hi James;

I use a 5D Mk1, I've bought both the Samyang 14mm and 35mm lenses, I like them both.

Here's a few Samyang 14mm shots;

Thanks for the uploaded images gone off the 35mm a little just tried out some lenses today and feel I would need wider than 35mm for the intended purpose of taking landscape shots.

What was wrong with the 50mm? There is no ideal focal length for landscapes, I've taken them as wide as 10mm and as long as 250mm!

The 50mm was very soft in the corners, and as for why I am looking at wider now it's because I cover at 180mm with my medium format camera and I admit a long lens is very good for landscapes but I am going to buy wider for digital so I have wide and midrange on my canon and midrange to telephone on my mamiya until I can afford more it's best for me to cover the range of wide to telephoto over the two cameras.
