Hi everyone,

I've not heard a lot about this newly released lens, I saw some sample photos on Flickr in the dedicated group. (which I think still only has a dozen members, most who are probably looking for samples like me)

Has anybody here purchased it and could they tell me what they think of it?

Is it practical to manual focus and how do they rate the general handling and build quality, not to mention picture quality?

Thanks.

no electrical contact with the camera ad completely manual. not worth the money IMHO

you seem to have a big interest in a lens that most people would steer clear of as old ( manual ) technology ..........

What, a bit like the Samyang 85/1.4 that no-one wants you mean? ;) If the price comes down closer to the £200.00 mark then I think it should sell well.

'you think' , still seems to be a bit of a non starter , are the optics that good that AF is not a loss ............

pretty much yeah - how many people would rather have an fully automatic f1.8 lens than a totally manual f1.4 lens

Well look at the Samyang 14mm, which is generally agreed to produce better pictures than the 14mm L Canon.. and then you see that the price tag is about £250.

Then you see the 8mm fisheye they produce, which is also supposed to be pretty good - its £200.

I can't say for sure since I haven't tested them out but for someone like me with not very much money they are great offerings.

Time will tell I suppose. What's the cheapest full frame 35/1.4 AF lens you can buy? Canon's L is over £1000.00. Nikon's is £1300.00. I imagine the cheapest (decent) fast wide for FF and crop would be the Canon 28/1.8, which would give similar shutter speeds in low light.

The Samyang 85mm f/1.4 is the sharpest lens I own by far. Its sharper than the canon 100mmL I had.

If the gear snobs want to bypass it, then suits me fine. I know how damn good it is and its a quarter of the price than the Sigma or Nikon versions.

The only problem is the manual focus.

I can manually focus and get images as in focus as the auto focus can most of the time but it takes me a lot longer. For someone in even less rush than me I think these lenses make good sense especially for someone who spends a lot of time hyperfocal or zone focusing.

If it has distance and DoF markings and if the price is right it might just be a very nice thing to have.

PS. I just Googled it and it has distance and DoF markings.

Anyone know if there's plans for a version that supports metering on lower end Nikons?

£400 seems like a relative bargain, look at the cost of the equivalents from other manufacturers, add £1000 just to get AF. I find I get better shots at 1.4 using manual than AF

Think one of these will go very nicely with my D800 when it arrives :D

I had a go with one at focus at the NEC . was pretty bangin'
