Had to be quick as ironically I'm more busy over Christmas! Not 100% sure how to upload from Flickr so if this hasn't worked will try from my pc later!

It's underexposed for sure, and to some people not that old, but it's from my childhood :)

The flickr upload & link worked :)
In the world of gaming Gameboys aren't just old, they are pre-historic, so definetly fine for the subject.

You've gone for as shallow a DoF as your lens will allow and you've got the gameboy in focus with the background beginning to blur out. :)

Try to look beyond the subject of your shot. The glass bowl and black (I'm not sure, cases?) objects distract the eye. Better composition may have been to use either the curtains or the bare wall as the backdrop and to remove the other objects.
But all in all, a good first shot for your 52 :)

Thanks for the advice! I think I'm going to have to invest in a pure white tablecloth or something :)

A dark one might be better (I use a very dark blue tablecoth), or there are backdrop kits available for not too much money (though every one I've seen are a bit too large for my usage (and storage)).

Spotted table cloth works well (strangely), but as above, need to loose the background clutter. Perhaps consider a tighter crop on the subject as well as some directional lighting to highlight the game title. Good start all the same

Hi Sam and welcome ....I don't mind the spotty tablecloth, I think it works for this one as it looks slightly retro, but I think it definitely needs a closer crop.
I would invest in some large cardboard sheets for backgrounds, definitely a black, and a white for starters, you can get it at The Range or Hobby shops, I think on the whole card is more manageable than cloth.

Looking forward to following your thread.

Thanks for all the positive and very helpful comments! Totally agree about a closer crop of the photo.

I think a trip to the range is on the cards some time this week! :)

Don't let my ( 20 odd year old) son hear you say that, he still has his and still plays poke'mon on it too :D

Nice start Sam, I supposed to the yung'uns it really is old technology

My son used to play this as well in his mid twenties now. A good start.

I agree with the above comments and A clean background would've works better with this one. Sometimes having context does work but the focal point for this is the GameBoy.

anyway welcome aboard and good first post, cheers

Hi, a good start to your 52 the BG has been mentioned, look forward to seeing some more

Hi Sam. Welcome to TPO52 - hope you enjoy. Love the image, particularly the bold spots and the DoF. Gameboys .. oh yeah, remember those.

I like the subject matter and the use of the blues to highlight the game.

Looks good to me Sam - copper tones have come out beautifully and the industrial look of the boiler (?!?) is awesome - great find and spot on theme.

Looks good, is it a still?

I think it was, but it could have just been a water boiler, we were being rushed along and it was busy, couldn't stop and have a proper look.

Its a shame you were being rushed a long, a different angle would have gave pic a better perspective, lovely richness in the copper and brass, a portrait take would have got more of boiler in, one to revisit maybe:)

Thanks a lot :)

yeah, some better lighting and more time would be nice, and will re visit when it's a nice day so I can get some better pics of the animals too :)

Hi Sam.
Great colours in the copper.and an interesting angle (I assume it's up high).
As Walter says, it's a shame they were hurrying you along, as a bit more time to compose the shot would hopefully have resulted in the top not being cropped off.
Good spot!

Thanks :) Yeah it was up high.

Hi, would perhaps have cropped it just to include some of the detail, lovely colour as already mentioned

Well spotted, there's a lovely colour in the copper.
I like Allan's suggestion, I think if you were to crop it and lose the background it would be a stronger image

Now that's a proper machine there.

Lovely copper colour there.

I suspect there is a better crop in there somewhere to remove some of the distractions, ie the thingy on the RHS.

Cheers.

I seem to be following Andy around this evening and essentially agreeing with everything he's spotted. I do like the colour and that the crop is bothering me.

Would look much better either a little further out or alternatively, much tighter in / abstract.

Hi Sam ...your shot looks even more vibrant on your Flickr link ....lots of lovely shiny metal there, there are some distractions but as you say sometimes you have to get what you can. Just zoomed in and I think the crop would work well.

Thanks for all the comments and constructive criticism, much appreciated and I actually agree with all of it :)

Hi Sam, throwing my two cents in for what they're worth!

I think a much tighter crop showing off the lovely tones of the copper would be nice, the background doesn't do much for me as it is!

Hi Sam, pity you were being hurried along as I can see a lot of potential there but nevertheless you still able to capture a nice shot. Personally I would cropped out the pipe at bottom right and the hatch too.

Love the tones and pity you didn't have more time (im soo guilty of run and gun due to various reasons then constantly kicking myself when i get back and view the images :( )

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated :)

I would keep thee crop as it is and have a go at using the clone tool to remove any distractions as mentioned. Nice subject though

I think I might try that later this week :)

Hi Sam, strong image, I like the idea and the framing of how the pipes exit either side.Like the detail of the joints and nuts and bolts. Good luck completing you 52

Hi Sam, I think you would struggle to find a more metal object than that to use as a subject! Nice image overall. Due to it's construction, I think it would make a worthy subject for some close ups of the nuts and bolts too :)
