I was asked by a member in a different thread about samples from the 100-400 Zoom with the Canon 2x TC II, rather than clutter a non relevent thread here are the images requested.

Bit Unscientific as a very overcast day, but gives an idea of real life use.

Equipment, Canon 1D MKIV with Canon 100-400 f4.5/f5.6 and Canon 2x II TC mounted on a Monopod, Standard images using autofocus TC images Manual via liveview.

All Images direct from RAW - NO SHARPENING

3 Sets of Images, showing Close - Mid - Long Range

2 Images Per Shot, One of Full Frame & One 100% Crop

Well that's interesting, but they don't look very sharp - as you would expect.

And f/11 with no AF (apart from live view) just isn't practical.

Totally agree with you, its not a combination I would use, just someone asked for samples and as I had both sitting on my desk..

Bearing in mind the light is awful today and was having to go to iso640 just to get 1/500th, that may well have some impact on the sharpness, but personally I don't think its a useable combination unless it was a dire emergency and it was that or nothing.

light poor and only iso 640, thats not poor.
 
thanks for that Richard, i think it was what i was expecting really, im guessing the 1.4x would fair alot better
