Ok, so here is my first attempt and my first public posting of any of my photographs where I am (nervously) hoping for some constructive comments.

Despite having my SLR for about 18months, I've only recently started to get my head round the relationships between shutter speed, aperture and ISO enought to come off the Auto settings and try the manual ones. I've also recently got a copy of Elements 9 and so am learning how to use that as I go.

So, onto the photo. In Scottish Gaelic, 'Failte' means welcome, which is what any decent accomodation should be.

hmm - somethings gone wrong with the resize. Will have another attempt.

Hi Sam,

I see you are trying to upload from Flickr. If you click on the image in Flickr to open it, then right click and select the size you want, that will open and then right click the image, click on Properties, highlight the Address (URL), right click, Copy ..... then on TP copy the URL address in the 'Insert Image' URL.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

thank you so much for that. Dont think I'd have figured that out myself and the FAQ describes it in a slightly different way.

many thanks

Hiya Sam

Congrats on uploading the right size, glad the explanation helped. There is probably another way to do it, but that is the way I find easiest.

BTW welcome to TP, it is a year since I joined and I can recall having difficulty uploading photos at first, but once you get the hang of it, you will be on your way to uploading more. Just remember the size limits.

Regards your photo, I think it is a good take on the first theme. I like the b&w conversion. I think a slight crop off the top to make the angle equal to the doorway angle would look a bit better and will also reduce the brightness of the sky.

Did you by any chance take any from a different angle to get the door in?

Well done of the first of your 52 and look forward to the coming weeks.

Cheers

Dawn :)

thanks Dawn. I took a few shots from different angles, but didnt really find a particularly pleasing one that gave the detail of the sign and that managed to get the doorway in. I've added some of the other shots onto my Flickr account if you like to take a look.

Hiya Sam

You are welcome, thank I have had a look at the other photos on Flickr, and I like 2011_01_08_0106 (with a crop to the end of the wall on the right and a slight straighten and sharpen would make it great) and I also like 2011_01_08_0108, once again with a bit of a crop to exclude the letterbox and a sharpen would look fab. I hope you don't mind but I copied these to my desktop just to have a play to check what I was thinking and trying to say. If you would like to see the result I could send them to you.

This subject that you have shot has so many posibilities as it works both in mono and colour.

Well done and well spotted, I think it is actually a lovely image.

Cheers

Dawn :)

thanks Dawn - I would be really interested to see what you come up with.

You're welcome Sam. So as not to hi-jack this thread with the images, if you don't mind you could PM me your email address so I can send them to you via email as attached files.

Cheers

Week 2 picture now added - 'New Growth'

I love macro and have never really tried taking any macro shots - mainly because I don't have a macro lens and because on a point & shoot I could never get focusing right. I have perservered with my 18-55 kit lens over the last few days with some cress seed especially sown for this purpose.

I know that the photo isnt great - the lighting is out (i just used overhead spot lights and the onboard flash) and the composition could have been a bit better - unfortuanately I set the seeds in big clumps rather than 3-4 together.
A least I can look forward to a tasty egg & cress sandwich as a result of this!!!

Well I got a set of extension tubes and have been playing with them for hte last week and am reposting my 'New Growth' photo as

Still a bit of work to do as a bit soft around the edges, but better than my original attempt!

#3, my immediate reaction was that the focus should be on the middle style but now I think you got it right.

Sometimes minimal is good...

Cheers.

Hi Sam,

Have to say I like your take on both week 2 and 3.

The second image of your New theme is an improvement on the first image, and as you said a bit soft, but a lovely DOF.

I like the photo for week 3 and think you have got the focus right and first word with the others gradually fading.

Well done and I look forward to seeing what you get for next week's theme.

Cheers

Dawn :)

thanks folks. I did try a few different points of focus, but when reviewing them I thought that that was the best of the bunch.

I'm in the process of moving house at the moment and so am losing internet connection until the 14th Feb, so I will probably post weeks 4,5 &6 together unless I can borrow someones connection!

Week 2, I like the second shot better than the original, good try on your fist attempts at macro.

Week 3, This one works really well for me, nice simple idea with a good use of DOF. Well done
