Yes
Hi, i have really got the bug.

Recently bought a D70 with a vr short lens. Also bought a tamron 28-300 with no anti Camera Shake on it.

My question is. As the D70 is a 6.1MP body. Would you recommend getting a further upto 300 lens with VR and better specs (£300-£1000) or going for a better body like a D200/D300 and getting a not so great lens , Would the D70 glass work on a d200/d300?

I hear time and time again that glass is more important than the body but at what stage do you need to move up to a new model body, If i intend moving up to a newer body is it best to do it now or get better glass.

Thanks. I am sure you can see where i am coming from.

You need to move up to a better body when you have run out of glass to upgrade :D

In all seriousness, what do you feel you need more?
Do you need a more capable lens? Or is your current camera body creating images of too low a resolution, forcing you to think more carefully about image framing? Or is the body's FPS too slow?

You got to weigh up the pros and cons.

No point getting a ferrari and putting a reliant robin engine in instead, but if you get a reliant robin and put a ferrari engine in, its going to be much better!
Obviously a ferrari engine in a ferrari will be the dogs, but you catch my drift?

I decided to go for the glass - I have Canons, 350D and bought a second hand 400D but decided to go for the best lenses I could afford so that when I do eventually upgrade the camera I will have the lenses to go with it. Otherwise I could see myself being tempted with the newer versions of the cameras and never saving enough for a decent lens.

This has suited me so far.

Its suited me too.
350d which doesn't beat the 40d at anything but price, but I've got all the lenses I want, so I intend on upgrading my body when I get a chance.
Thing is, I'm more easily tempted by glass because I go for the Sigma versions which tend to be cheaper than upgrading my body :p

Absolutely.

The resoloution worries me a little but the shots are still nice. I am seriously considering getting a better longer lens but the money i spend on that could go on a better body where i will already have a very nice short lens.

Its a tricky one. Perhaps try getting a nice affordable ferrari engine in the reliant robin and take it steady rather than wanting/dreaming of a top body and top glass at this stage. I possibly couldnt do it justice at the moment anyway. Maybe i am being impatient lol.

Get the best out of what i have first before moving up?

So if i got a very nice vr nikon lens upto 300 or maybe 400 it would be more prudent than spending £1500 on a top body and bit of glass. I just feel i am missing out on these Top Bodys with 12mp or even 14 but i do realise that the glass is important, just worried that i wont get that much better results with better glass on the D70

I can see me going with what you hint at.

Thanks

other thing is good lenses don't seem to depreciate at all - if you did find one you're not using, just stick it on ebay and you'll probably recover 80% of the cost or more.

Kerioak and Nat

Just seen your posts and along with Food;s posts i think you have shown me the way to go.

Glass it is and have a bit of patience.

What a website this is :)

i went for the lens. got the sgima 100-300 F4 for my D40x and hopefully within the next year or so i will have a D200/300 knowing the lens will fit nicely on there

The conventional wisdom with this always seems to be to go for the glass first.

The stage i needed to move up to a better body was when my then current body's AF system was lagging behind my own personal skills (namely with birds in flight).

Its up to you to decide what you actually want to take photos of mostly to help you decide between the two.

It's all a matter of personal preference. I tend to agree that upgrading glass is the better route, but there comes a point where upgrading the body can be viewed as an upgrade to ALL of your lenses.

For example, I have the following lenses (all Nikon): 18-200 VR, 80-400 VR, 105 VR micro, and 10.5 fisheye.

This is nice glass...not exactly professional glass, but as good as I can afford, especially the 80-400. By upgrading my D80 to a D300, I achieved better color rendition and much better IQ relative to noise above ISO 400. With the D300, pics at ISO 1600 have about the same noise level as those at ISO 400 with my D80. That means I've effectively added some f/stops to all four lenses! For me, that was the way to go, especially since I wanted a second body.

Don't worry, though, I'm already planning my next lens purchase! (14-24 f/2.8)

Nice pic that. Impressive i love my 18-70vr lens . Just looking to improve those longer shots. Better galss looks the way to go.

glass is a much better investment, as it along can increase the sharpness of a photo. if i was in your situation i would only upgrade your body when you feel its holding you back. so you need better fps would be a good idea to upgrade but unless your consistantly shooting sports etc its doesnt seem a worth while investment. the D70 is still a good body even though its been replaced. basicly with the body if its not broken dont fix it.

I've been in a similar predicament, but decided to get my lenses first and keep my canon 40D. Getting really good glass is a much better investment and you will probably see greater improvements doing it this way. I've come to a conclusion though, It seems no matter how much kit you have you always want more (I always seem to want something else). I thought I had reached the point of getting everything I need but now want a 300m f2.8 lens. I guess I'm just greedy.

No point getting a ferrari and putting a reliant robin engine in instead, but if you get a reliant robin and put a ferrari engine in, its going to be much better!
Obviously a ferrari engine in a ferrari will be the dogs, but you catch my drift?

But whats better?
Ferrari?
Porsche?
Lamborghini?
:p

personally if you are questioning whether you need a new body, you probably dont, so buy the glass instead:thumbs: if memory serves correctly, any lens that fits your d70 will fit the d200/d300, but dont quote me on that

Top Stuff Guys

Am going Cricket tomorrow and aim to take the 28-300 for the middle and also the 18-70 VR fr close shots/ If i get ONE decent pic i will be happy.

Really great site this , but the photography lark has already got me on here and ebay for every spare moment looking at glass!!

Glass first another body later.:D
