Just returned from two weeks holiday, which involved driving from Kent, via the Tunnel, to Salzburg, Austria, taking in the Alsace and Germany (not so efficient) motorways.
Let's get the bad bit out of the way first - roadworks. I have always been led to believe that German motorways were the best, but this latest trip would suggest otherwise, as it contained many miles of lane closures and contraflow systems, which combined with some torrential rain and high speed driving from the locals, resulted in a white knuckle driving experience.
Anyway, that was the bad bit, and thankfully, Salzburg, the Austrian Tirol and the Bavarian Alps helped to wipe out that little glitch.
Salzburg is undoubtably the best little city I have ever visited. It has the architecture, friendly people, music, stunning scenery and great beer and wine. They also celebrate the "Oktoberfest", starting a good two weeks early - cannot argue with that logic
. An organised "Sound of Music" tour (the missus is an addict, and sees the film at every opportunity) hinted at great scenery, so I had to spend a day exploring further. This led to an amusing navigation error on my part, helped by an Austrian tourist map. I looked at the map and headed for what I thought was the East and the Austrian Tirol, but had not reckoned for the map depicting West as Right, and East as Left (they had left North at the top and South at the bottom though
). So, that day was spent slowly taking in the Bavarian Alps, snow capped mountains, blue lakes, and amazing shades of green amongst the fields and forests.
The following day, we took in a Mozart piano concerto in Salzburg (the guy was a complete genius, he started composing at 5 years old), and in the evening took in the delights of the beer tent with singing and dancing. Many of the locals were traditionally dressed and it was a fantastic experience.
I don't know how many folks on here have been to that little gem in Austria, but I can thoroughly recommend it.
