Just returned from two weeks holiday, which involved driving from Kent, via the Tunnel, to Salzburg, Austria, taking in the Alsace and Germany (not so efficient) motorways.
Let's get the bad bit out of the way first - roadworks. I have always been led to believe that German motorways were the best, but this latest trip would suggest otherwise, as it contained many miles of lane closures and contraflow systems, which combined with some torrential rain and high speed driving from the locals, resulted in a white knuckle driving experience.
Anyway, that was the bad bit, and thankfully, Salzburg, the Austrian Tirol and the Bavarian Alps helped to wipe out that little glitch.
Salzburg is undoubtably the best little city I have ever visited. It has the architecture, friendly people, music, stunning scenery and great beer and wine. They also celebrate the "Oktoberfest", starting a good two weeks early - cannot argue with that logic:). An organised "Sound of Music" tour (the missus is an addict, and sees the film at every opportunity) hinted at great scenery, so I had to spend a day exploring further. This led to an amusing navigation error on my part, helped by an Austrian tourist map. I looked at the map and headed for what I thought was the East and the Austrian Tirol, but had not reckoned for the map depicting West as Right, and East as Left (they had left North at the top and South at the bottom though:confused:). So, that day was spent slowly taking in the Bavarian Alps, snow capped mountains, blue lakes, and amazing shades of green amongst the fields and forests.
The following day, we took in a Mozart piano concerto in Salzburg (the guy was a complete genius, he started composing at 5 years old), and in the evening took in the delights of the beer tent with singing and dancing. Many of the locals were traditionally dressed and it was a fantastic experience.
I don't know how many folks on here have been to that little gem in Austria, but I can thoroughly recommend it.

Only a day there when staying with friends in Vienna but it was amazing.

Managed to leave my camera in Vienna so only have memories (which was a better way to enjoy the city)...

Salzburg is lovely, though I haven't been there in a very long time. Somewhere at home there's an album of photos.

Sounds great, we have a trip in January to Austria so may take Salzburg in for a day as I believe we’re not far from it. (y)

Austria (and Salzburg) is a place I have always wanted to go! Hope you get round to posting some pics on here!

Ah! The skiing is superb! (at times) - the Austrian Alps are a bit lower than the French and Swiss/Italian Alps.
Kitzbuhel was good fun. Great people, beer, food etc.

I will try to get some posted ASAP, but I still have nearly 300 wedding shots to process first (two days before we left - I have left the B & G a few tasters).
It is difficult to describe the happy atmosphere in Salzburg, where not just the performers at the festival were in traditional dress but also nearly every Austrian person - you just don't get that in the UK.
I wouldn't hesitate to return there again, although there are so many other places I would love to visit in Europe - St Petersburg, Dubrovnic, Prague, Vienna.

I'm a little biased, but there's nowhere like Austria, and if you liked Salzburg then you should also visit Vienna, though it's not the same light-hearted & happy place. Not sure St Petersburg is in Europe unless you count Russia as European.

Haven't been to Salzberg in 20 years, but I certainly remember how beautiful it is.

FWIW, Moscow and St Petersburg are in 'European Russia', the part of Russia west of the Urals.

Pictures or it didn't happen :)

Prague is 100% worth it. I'd stay well away from Vienna unless you are just going to a concert or a fancy restaurant in which case do go. I found it very bland and scary after dark - and not a single nice image to post.

Let me help you with primary school geography

Yes, it appears St. Petersburg is in Europe. I also heard it has great and very European historic centre but can't personally show you till I've travelled there.

How very kind. Let me know when you've booked the tickets so that you can show me too. :)
