Yes
I've seen a video on youtube where the pro photographer is walking around with the camera still attached to his tripod.

It looked a bit iffy to me, I know it's locked onto the plate via the quick release mechanism, but I didn't feel confident about it when I tried it the other day....

What do you think about it? :cuckoo: or

I walk around with my 1D MKII and 70-200 2.8 attached to my tripod and slung over my shoulder all the time....usually keep the camera strap round my shoulder too though....just in case! But bearing in mind the money I paid for my tripod..I should hope it doesn't let go!

I carry a 5D with a 70 - 200 lens on a manfrotto tripod and just throw it over my shoulder like a bag of spuds. I agree it may look scary but I know it's locked on quite securely. After all, it's insured on an all risk policy.

Maybe a bit risky but I've done it too :naughty:

I do it all the time, rather than strip everything down to move the setup short distances. Providing you're using the head for the job and everything is secured properly, I don't see it as a problem. Wildlife cine photographers do it all the time with huge tripods and much heavier gear.

Heck yes, I carry a 300-800 on a 393 head around all the time. One tripod leg extended for the just in case shot, does not seem to do any harm.

Ooooh... I missed you acquiring the 300-800!

Mine is always over my shoulder never thought about it but you need a decent tripod and head a 10.99 asda jobbie would be asking for trouble

Hmmm, maybe if it was a brand name tripod we all trust and a dslr with no battery pack and long pro telephoto lens. Maybe...

i have had a camera drop from a tripod with a quick release plate - with the camera pointed down with a heavy flash - so wrap the camera strap around the pan arm - just in case...

i always do this now

Mine is a Hama Omega pro legs with Manfrotto 804rc2 head with D2H and either 300mm or 400mm lens and its more comfy to carry this way but the legs are padded

D200, battery pack or D300 without, Sigma 300-800 or Nikon 600 F4 on a 393 head, carried on a REDSNAPPER tripod works fine. What a brand name tripod has to do with it, i`m not too sure...............

Thanks for all the replies....all positive, bar 1!

As I've got relatively light gear to you lot....I shouldn't have any probs then. It was a lot easier & convenient moving between locations like this I must admit...it's just I was twitchin a bit with my spankin new gear hanging over my shoulder where I couldn't see it....

Sod it then, next time I'll carry it round like that, with the strap attached to summat too - just in case! ;)

cheers

The only real danger I can see is if you have a blonde moment and don't tighten an Arca plate sufficiently into the mount. One of the nice things with the 393 is it has a safety device to prevent the lot sliding out of the shoe, but if you're using generic Arca plates, try to get them with a safety stop at each end.

I've carried my camera short distances with tripod attached, but with the strap round my neck as well if it's more than a few steps.

And that innocent comment is just one reason why this forum is so great! I'd never thought about leaving one leg extended! Ready made monopod!

I carry the cam on the tripod all the time, seems safe enough to me but can dig into my shoulders on long walks.

I carry the 40D, with grip and the 70-300 on my old "Slik 80" all the time. It's the easiest way to move around the lakes and river banks. (and that Tripod is bloody heay. so it's easier to catty over your shoulder).

Fracster, great tip, many thanks....

i find it easier carrying the camera normally with tripod attached over my shoulder when i actually use a tripod, saves carrying one piece of equipment in each hand

Yip, me too...

I`ve always got my tripod with me, use it loads. :D

And I`ve gone walking about the country side with the camera still attached loads of times but like others have said... not for too long a distance.

:)
