I've installed it on both OS-X and XP. It's even quicker than the earlier version on OS-X and it seems to be even faster in XP. I can now ditch that awful firefox.
 
Boo!

I cannot even get a decent version for my Mac as I am still on Jaguar and now they are giving it to Windows users.

I've installed it at work but can't use it - proxy settings are greyed out in preferences. I'll have another look at it when I have more time this afternoon to see if I've missed something but if not I might have a look at home.
 
I'm using it now. It's pretty sweet. It's fast enough at rendering pages but scrolling isn't very smooth. The font rendering is fantastic - websites look a lot cleaner and clearer.

No add blocker though - can't see me using it regularly until that appears. I didn't realise how many ads were on the pages I use every day until now.
 
I like it, but it needs work. It doesn't have the mouse functionality that I'm used to with other browsers.
 
so far after downloading it i have already had enough of it and gone back to firefox. It just didn't seem to run smoothly on my comp, might be because it is nearly 4 years old, getting a new one soon though. Am undecided on mac or windows.
 
What is this madness you're all speaking of.:thinking: Just use Opera.. its the solution to all your browser problems.:thumbs:
 
It's crap, but it makes sense from a business standpoint I guess—easier for people to test sites on (which means they'll be able to boast of better compatibility), the ability for Windows devs to develop for the iPhone...

I never tested any of my sites for Safari before (outside of work) but now I'll be able to.
 
Makes business sense for Apple too. More users = more $$'s.

Can't see the point actually.

Like all the non-MS others it will have problems with sites that use MS only features PLUS Safari historically has no less security problems than MSIE, except that the impact will be less widespread simply because there are far fewer Mac users than Windows users.
 
I have no browser problems but started using FF some time ago simply for the tabbed browsing. Now even IE does that. However the add-ons for FF became so addictive that I just cannot break away from it despite one or two weaknesses (Like being unable to listen to my vodafone voicemail which IE offers).

I never even gave Safari a chance when I bought my first Mac a few weeks back. I simply did not want to learn too many new things.

Too many browsers? The more the merrier I say as this will lead to faster developments and maybe some great improvements. People will most likely fall into two camps 1) those that will use the browser that came with the box and 2) those that use the browser they prefer for their own personal reasons despite any other compelling argument.
 
There's one thing it's good for, properly displaying images with icc profiles, according the the blurb.
 
I only use Safari to download Firefox and that's how I browse! On all 3 of my Macs....

Yeah, thats a real bummer. That's pretty much killed off any idea I had of using it semi-regularly.

Thats true, there are flaws in pretty much every piece of software (I should know LOL) but on the other hand, the only reason I could imagine wanting to move away from MSIE would be to get around what people consider to be a "holey piece of software". Especially given the point I made earlier about non-MS browsers always having the potential for incompatibility with some websites.

All I can say is that don't imagine something non-MS is any more secure than Bill's boys can churn out. If anything MS potentially is MORE secure simply because of the money they can throw at developing and *fixing* problems compared to anyone else.

Yup the blurb is right. Safari is the only browser around that actually reads the embedded ICC profile in your image. Hopefully it'll make other browsers adopt the same feature. Its stupid that its taken this long to do so considering how image friendly the web is now days.

If people are dumb enough to use IE only features then they deserve to have their site break in other browsers.

Its always been another browser to test your site on, just hard, not impossible, to test if you don't have a Mac :)

And the bugs are in the windows version... and Safari 3 is a beta for both OSX and Windows. For the record, incase anyone thinks so, I use Firefox not Safari.

That is a very risky assumption to make, and historically it has proved to be false. Microsoft does fix exploits but they are renowned for being exceptionally slow at doing so.

Did you fall into a coma during 1998-2006? Windows being zombied in under 5 minutes. Browsers being compromised in seconds. IE6 was more insecure than an emo with social anxiety issues. I reckon the entire world of the open source community working on fixes for Firefox beats Bills little boys. Remember that time, at band camp, when they found a security problem with XP, 2k and NT4?
 
BTW, I should declare my position on this, I do "information security" for a job and see rather more unpatched holes than anyone would care to... :D

People poke holes in things with the most impact, which usually means the software with the greatest exposure, which means M$ most of the time. Bills Boys have woken up to this, I will agree its taken them some time tho!

These holes have been poked in Safari simply because Apple threw down the gauntlet... which is something you really don't ever want to do...
 
Only at the weekends, I mean why else would someone have a wireless remote for their camera :D

It has been funny reading through this thread. Ever since I adopted the Mac I have been using Safari. This means from its initial basic release through to its Beta upgrade now. I personally see no point in releasing a Windows version. Are Apple doing this in an effort to convert Windows users? Are they simply doing this to show they are intested in supporting the Windows community in other applications than Quicktime and iTunes?

Comments such as 'crap' (as in this thread) are a little narrowminded. Safari is fully integrated into the OSX workflow and until you actually pick up a Mac and use it to its full potential you will never understand how flexible and easy they are to use. Trying to adopt this workflow into Windows is almost impossible so I would consider it more an independant browser on the Windows platform.

Windows version maybe because they can now they are x86 :shrug:
Maybe they have something to sell through their browser and they are gearing towards integrating that with other products/services?? :shrug:

The iPhone will sync your music, videos and bookmarks to your phone. It syncs bookmarks with Safari. That'll be one reason why they want you to use it. Another will be because if you own an iPhone, iPod, use iTunes, and Safari you might think about switching to a Mac.

You need IETab That might work ;)

As for Opera, I downloaded and installed it the other night.

I must say I love the look of it. The font smoothing is pretty (although needs to be more tweakable). No new tab button on the toolbar is annoying (I know I can use CTRL T but I prefer the button).

If I could just get Firefox to look and feel like Safari, I'd be happy.
