I was catching the sunrise on the beach in Galveston Texas when a gentlemen approached me and started a conversation about what I was doing. Normally I would be in a race for light and politely excuse myself in no time. For some reason I did not, I actually stopped and talk to the nice man for a good while. There was just something about him that stud out to me.
That was the last thing I remembered before waking up in the ambulance. While we were talking an out of control truck crossed 8 lanes, jumped the curb and ran over both of us. The nice gentleman was killed instantly and I suffered a compounded open fracture head trauma along with a list of other injuries. I was in the hospital for a week and been home cared tied to a wheel chair going on two weeks now. After 3 surgeries I think there is light at the end of the tunnel. My 5dIII and 70-200II were not so lucky. They took a direct hit and are waisted. I felt like I needed to tell my friends at the forum because photography has become such a big part of my life and the members here deserve most of the credit. I learned and continue to grow from the great in site gathered here. This experience was unusual for sure but photography put me there none the less. If you want to read about what happened just google my name, shayne sabala and Galveston sea wall. There are many stories about it. I didn't know where to post this so feel free to place it in the proper spot. Thanks everyone.ImageUploadedByTalk Photography Forums1403673580.243329.jpg

Blimey, don't know what to say. In one hand lucky to be alive, but it really feel for you.
Cameras can be replaced, you need to concentrate on getting well again. Best wishes.

Holy crap!

Get well soon. Forget the cameras... they're just things, and let's be honest, a good photographer can use anything. Concentrate on getting well.

That's horrific  Glad that you're on the mend

Horrendous story - hope you fully recover.

Horrific thing to happen I hope you make a full recovery after this tragic event. You certainly had someone looking after you that day, the poor guy whom lost his life is tragic. You have been given another chance your kit will be replaced and you will see another sunrise, all the best and a very speedy recovery. My deepest sympathies are extended to the loved ones of the man who was killed, if you know them pass on my thoughts to them.

glad you're recovering from this horrific event. Cameras aren't that important and easily replaced.

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery. Deepest sympathies for the man who had his life taken away.

Sympathies go out to the family of the nice guy who lost his life and hope you have a speedy recovery.

Blimey I wondered where this was going at the start... thought you were going to say he nicked your camera but my god. Glad you made it to other side and on the mend.

So sad for the guy to lose his life in such a tragic accident.

As everyone else cameras and equipment can be replaced.

Here's to a speedy recovery.

Can't add much other than to wish you a full and speedy recovery...

Hi Shayne, I really don't know just what to say, a truly horrific thing to happen. I really do hope you make a speedy and full recovery and my condolences to the family of the poor guy that lost his life.

All the very best.,

George.

Wow man... get well soon and count your blessings. From the article arclight posted, it seems like this could easily have ended much worse for you. All the best. Take it easy.

Oh, and forget about your gear. Someone's insurance will have to take care of this I'm sure. It's just stuff.

Bloody hell thats awful!.. glad you are still here and getting better

Blooming hell, first of all condolences to the un-known nice guy and his loved ones for a life ended prematurely...

And on the same not I'm glad that you while battered and bruised are still here to tell the story, that said I hope your recovery isn't a long one...

Finally it's only a camera it can be replaced as much as your mourn its loss now

Cripes

Count your blessings (I'm sure you are) and get well soon fella

How sad, hope you make a speedy recovery.

That is one lucky escape, I hope for your speedy and strong recovery. Standing and talking to the unfortunate nice guy who stopped to chat rather than behind your camera taking pictures might just have saved your life.

Holy hell. Hope you get well soon mate! All the best.

Genuinely shocking, sad for the loss of life of the gentleman and i wish you a safe and speedy recovery.

I wish you a speedy recovery Shane. Truly speechless, get yourself better then you can start thinking about replacing cameras.

Thought I'd not seen you around recently. It's really good to see that you're determined to get better again - as has already been said, it seems you have been given a second chance, so don't waste it.

What an awful end to your holiday. Best wishes and get well soon Shayne.
