Edit My Images
Yes
IM thinking of getting a canon s95 as a carry around camera.
I'd like a low light camera, that's small with really sharp pictures.
I rarely go above 800 iso.
Has anyone any experience with this camera?
Thanx in advance
Den

My other half has the S95is.

Seems to produce nice images.

I see that even typing the word Canon now is nsfw..I knew it would happen sooner or later.:D

The only thing I hate about it is that you cannot disable the rear wheel and in any mode bar Auto you can easily move it and it directly affects your images - I took a load of phots the other day in P and had accidently nudged the wheel - which changed the exposure compensation - very frustrating.

Great size, great images, annoying wheel.

Think NSFW now means "Look at my post". It seems to be just an attention seeker's way of getting attention!!!

could be posting from the mobile app...edited now anyway though!

It's a great little camera with excellent images, as was the S90 before it.

BTW, I haven't experienced DaveK's problem with the wheel.

I have a Canon G11, which uses the same sensor. You will not be disapointed with the images from this compact.

My S95 backs up my d700 wherever I have small packets and as long as you are happy shooting below 800 (400 in an ideal world ISO) it's a superb camera. IQ great, AF Very good, battery life really good, handling pretty good for a ealatively small handed poerson.
Sooooooooooooooooooo pocketable.
Oh and the HD movies are awesome considering its a sub £300 pocket camera!
And Canon do an awesome Leica esque case for it which is well worth getting :)

If you have any q's please ask :)

The S95 is a great little camera, very easy to use and takes great pictures, would recomend this little beauty.

Great camera. Same problem with the wheel though.

I got the S95 last month to take on Holiday as pocket 'snapshot' camera and I've been very happy with it so far.

It can be a bit slow to focus in low light, as with any compact camera, but I thought this would be better because of the price.

I like to shoot RAW, and while I'm getting to know it have set it to RAW+Jpeg, but it defaults to Jpeg only in anything other than the P,A,S,M modes. :(

I love the 'Miniature' scene mode effect.

Forget it for anything fast moving, but then that is the same for any compact camera again.

The Timer is excellent, being able to choose how long (1-30 secs), and how many pics (up to 10) are taken is great. That can be combined with bracketing as well. :)

Saying that, bracketing doesn't work as it should in Aperture Priority for for exposures over a second. :( Which had me scratching my head for awhile.

The adjuster ring around the lens is genius, and can be set to adjust various parameters. And you can change what the ring adjust quickly via the button on top of the camera. You can set up the ring on the lens, the shortcut button and the ring on the back to do most things quickly. :)

As has been said, the video is very good, even though it is on 720p.

There may be cameras with longer zoom ranges, but I found things I couldn't live with on the ones I tried.

As a truly pocket-able camera, I don't think there is anything better atm.

Id say the S95's biggest strengths are low light, and size.
It has a low light mode which compresses pixel size to eliminate noise, and you can get away with quite a lot using manual mode with high ISO and wide open aperture.
It really is quite a slick little camera.

Are you talking about an S90 or S95?

Wheel design was changed on S95 to stop it turning easily, I have not had any problems.

Great little camera by the way.

I have the s90 and HAVE experienced the problem with the wheel...

I also added the custom grip.

I had the Richard Franiec grip on my S90 and it makes a big difference so will have to get one for my S95 as well.

I've had the same problem on both cameras - that wheel turns too easily and the Franiec fix only works on the S90:'(

I haven't had a problem with the rear dial. I suppose it depends on how your hand naturally holds the camera.

I had read about the Richard Franiec grip, and thought I may have needed it, as my previous compact, the Fuji F31fdm had a little finger grip on the front which I thought I'd miss, but the slightly textured body of the S95 has been enough for me to keep a good grip. :) I think the s90 had a smoother, shinier body, and so was a bit slippier in the hand.

He does a wheel fix for the S90?

He did but he's just stopped, don't know why - it was effectively a raised washer that fitted around the control wheel to ensure you couldn't "brush" it.

I think the "improvement" to the wheel on the S95 meant that demand for a new version wasn't there - however, I'd have bought one!!;)

Thanx for all the replies.
I'm just gonna go for it ;-)

You won't regret it Denise.

I've got my D90 for when I go out intending to take photos and the S95 with me all the time in my bag for everything else. I absolutely love it. As mentioned above give the 'miniture mode' a go, its fab!

Have a look at a few of the groups on Flickr to see what it is capable of in the right hands.
