Anyone know what is happening to S/H prices and availability at the moment?

Are the S/H values rising along with the prices of new kit, are they holding quite steady or are they slowly dropping as would be expected?

Also are there differences between the availability of kit across the ranges e.g. Entry Level, Mid Level and Pro Level? I've noticed that Pro Lenses on here go within minutes and Pro bodies go within hours, and I think I'm seeing the mid range stuff go faster too, am I mistaken?

The reason I ask is that I was scanning the back pages of Amateur Photographer today and I was struggling to see any Nikon mid range (level below Pro) kit and there isn't much current kit available at all.

Others thoughts

S/H prices seem high - I'm amazed people are asking for (and getting!) £300 for Sigma 10-20's here for example.

The Nikon 50mm f/1.8 seems to be about £20 higher than you'd expect as well.

I imagine with the Pro stuff - well its more expensive to begin with, and thus a bigger potential saving. Run of the mill kit lens will probably hang around.

I'm seeing Nikon 70-200 VRs hitting £1100+ on Ebay used now.. and the 300mm f/4 AF-S is £250 higher than this time last year.

S/H kit in my opinion is getting higher and higher... As has been said, Nikon 50's are going for just a few pounds less than retail!!

I think it is only fair that 2nd hand to go up as prices of new goes up too! If that means that the seller is getting 100% of what he paid back, by selling an item now .. then that's just his luck

Take this to the flip side, if prices of new kit were dropping; the seller would have to adjust for that drop too .. and subsequently swallow the "extra" loss!

Prices of new and used run together ... and in such times, 2nd-hand owners have the upper hand as everyone is unhappy about prices of new kit!

Of course, had I known the £ was falling like this .. and glass prices were going up as they have. I wouldn't have sold my 70-200VR & 1.7TC for £1,000 (was just about 8 months old :'( .. an embryo by lens's age )... or my other stuff!

But fair is fair :)

Me too, especially when they are currently only £25 more brand new. It's a case of buyer beware I guess. Personally if people pay higher prices through a lack of their own ability or willingness to check the market then more fool them and more power to the people selling!

The problem isn't just price rises, there seems to be a shortage of many items as well.

Seems like a good time to get rid of unwanted Kit.

Tricky one though - I've got two lens I want to get shot of, and my purchase receipts are much less than they are now (£250 in both cases) - so no way could I list them here and not I'd feel I was taking the **** if I asked for the current going rate ie charging £xxx and including purchase receipt for £yyy in the box!

So it'll be Ebay for those, and let them find there own market value I think.

I sold a 5 week old 100-400 for £750:bonk:

Have you got anything else for sale?

I bought one with 4 months warranty left for £670 in November and thought I'd done very well. Clearly not.

I don't see why you think that, S/H prices are what they are. I think most buyers would understand that, if they don't they don't buy.

The main thing with S/H is that it is cheaper than new. I personally I would prefer to buy on here even at a slightly higher price as I trust most people on here.

What are you looking at selling?

I think more people are turning to S/H stuff due to the massive increases in new products prices. This in its own rights will drive up S/H prices.

Other things to take into consideration are that if you are looking to upgrade and need to sell old kit to fund it, you want to raise more from your old kit as the cost of the new kit has increased anyway.

Its the way of the world at the moment, just got to try and grab bargins while we can

I don't think it would be seen as a problem, it's not like you'd bought them with the express intention of making a profit, their value has now gone up and you'll be selling for what the current market value is :)

I wouldn't hold it against you, after all you don't set the current market price.

I've noticed them higher at present, there are still some bargains to be had however, wish i bought those extra bits i wanted last year (most people will be the same)

some prices seem silly to me for things but its just the way the market is, hopefully it will go down within the year and things get back to normal

i alwyas look for S/H goods first before buying new, only have the D300 and grip new, everything else has been S/H in as new condition

I see a lot of gear used selling for more than what I paid new.:D

I'm going through a very low spell in photo enthusiasm and often say to myself "I'll sell the lot if I could get the price I paid for it" so you may have me thinking now.

I saw the Kit lens for the 450d/100d go for £105 on ebay (not all this price mainly around 70-80), this seems really high! You can buy it new for £118.

I've seen lenses go for more secondhand on ebay than you have to pay for them new, and I don't mean ones where you could argue the older ones were better.

Ebay is an odd place.

You mean eBay isn't always the cheapest place to buy something :bonk:

I just mean that it is inconsistent, but then that is the whole thing about auctions. You would expect prices to vary, I'm not so sure you would expect them to exceed the prices for the same stuff if bought new.

I've bought some fantastic bargains off some great people.

I'm surprised, however, that people who understand the internet enough to use ebay don't appear to understand it enough to research prices.

There was a report last week stating Japan had there worst month in exports since the second world war down 45% surely this must have an effect on prices.

I only upgraded to a D60 at christmas and managed to get a 70-300VR just before prices went silly. Keep looking at ebay for older lenses AIS and hope to get a bargain but not likely.

I'm looking for a 50mm 1.8 E series there are plenty on there going for about £50. Am I going in the right direction?

Thats pricey for a Series E!

Look for an AI-S one.

Nothing wrong with Series E per se (some excellent lenses), but £50 is too high for a 50mm Series E.

Cheers
I wasnt going to pay more than £35, will keep looking there are plenty around it helps when they finish at an unusual time but shift work means I'm not always there for a last second steal.

sent you a pm i found some 50mm 1.8 in a shop avoid ebay if you can

i bought a 50mm f1.4 ai at a reasonable price

when i phone grays of westminster there prices are the highest [but good stuff]

the thing i realy dont like about them i allways feel like a working class oik being talked down to.
they have no photos of the stock [yet they got enough bleedin cameras] and trying to elicite a verbal description [i dont know all the variants is] is painfull.
they also quoted me one price for a f3 manual then 5 mins later quadrupled it as if it was my fault they got it wrong :gag:

short answer prices for nikon new or s/h even the film stuff is getting silly

Just keep the recipts:thumbs: the way I see it is if the money is going tawards new lenses you still need to pay inflated prices for them, Last year I priced a 35f1.4L and it was only £640 from kerso thay are now around that price for a 2-3 year old one:bang: I guess its a case of snooz ya looze lol.

2nd hand prices should fall over next few years as the recession tightens, more jobs will be lost and people have to sell kit. Desperately sad.....but inevitable.

Hmm interesting, I'm thinking it depends on the level of kit you are after I'm expecting an increase in "Pro Togs" over the next few years for this very reason and because of this the demand will stay high.

Based on my experiences of working in a photofinishers in South Wales during the early 1980’s when the economy there imploded I’d say your instinct that a lot of people will try and become “Pro” or “Semi-Pro”is correct. However I feel it’s a bit more complex than that.
The guys I remember switching to Pro when they lost their jobs concentrated on social photography, and set themselves up with redundancy money (invariably Mamiya kit). They were reasonably competent photographers, but had no feeling for running a business and were trying to establish themselves in an environment in which money was getting scarcer and scarcer. They ended up taking business off the established “real pros” the guys with ‘blads who knew how to use them and who consistently turned out beautiful sets of wedding pics on filthy horrible rain drenched Saturdays in bleak valley towns.

Ultimately these new guys themselves ended up being undercut by amateurs who were on the dole, but had a 35mm Olympus OM10 and who got their prints done at Truprint. The new “Mamiya Pros” lost their shops or studios as the cashflow dried and the redundancy cheque dribbled away.

Yes many people will try and make a go of it and buy some good kit….but that phase won’t last long, people won’t be able to afford to buy the photographs to justify it.

For most people purchasing professional photographs is highly discretionary, in a steep depression this discretionary spending will dry up markedly, more “amateur pro’s” entering the market will just spread meagre rations around more thinly

I just bought a secondhand Nikon 300mm f/4 AF-s from a shop for £600 which is less than they make on ebay

You don't need to pay a fortune - personally I really like older AI-S lenses and they are dirt cheap, and haven't been impacted by price rises.

I picked up a Sigma 90mm f/2.8 macro from here the other day (for £35!) and its a stonker!
