RZ67 Light Leaks

My RZ67 saga continues, I have finally managed to get out and run two rolls of HP5 through the camera. Firstly the negatives are amazing! I used to think HP5 was a bit grainy until I scanned these in!
Sadly it seems I have a light leak issue, to make it more exciting, it's there on some shots, sometimes obvious, sometimes faint, then some shots aren't affected.
What the **** is going on?! Please help my sanity with this one!

The last image shows where it is barely obvious, as the camera is modular I'm assuming it's the film holder rather than anything else? I'm confused!

Thanks

Adam

Light leaks aren't forced to be the same on every shot.

For example it depends at what angle the light is entering the camera and also if you run several shots off in quick succession and the light leak is "slow" then there's a chance those frames will be perfectly fine, whereas if you leave the camera stood for sometime, the following frame ( or the last frame that you exposed if you don't wind the film on) may well have a serious white band over it.

First thing is to locate where the leakage is coming from .....The film back ( seals) or the bellows....these are the two most likely culprits.

What Asha said and have a look to see if any seals have gone gooey or disintegrated.

Do you have another back you can try?

Thanks guys, just had the camera in a dark room, mirror up and very bright torch inside and can't see anything around the back seals, also checked the bellows and they seem fine as well, the plot thickens!
I don't have a second back to try unfortunately :(

Dunno if the RB67 back is the same but have a PDF file to do the seals that I could email you........ if stuck

As far as I can see on the back there are no seals between the body and back, however the seals around the closure on the back where you put the film holder in don't look too clever!
I think I might give up and just send this back, win some lose some on eBay and this is the second problem now :(

You could put a dark/black bag over the film holder next time you load up just to check that this is the problem.

I don't know if this makes a difference or not... But are the leak marks across the entire width of the film, or just within the 6x7 window of the image? My thinking is that if it's just within the frame window then the leak must be in the front of the camera like the bellows you mention, as that's the only part that's visible from that end. If the leaks are across the entire frame then it must be from a leak in the back?

Just thinking out loud, this could all be rubbish haha

If your back is an original RZ67 Professional back, it will have seals. If it's an RZ67 Professional II back it has light traps instead of seals. Could buy another back and test to see if the problem lies in the camera itself or the back.

The light leak does indeed run the length of the negative from side to side, so does this mean it is definitely from the back? Looking at prices I think I paid low enough that a second back for about £50 wouldn't be too much of an upset..

...and this was on two films?

Yes strangely the first film was affected more, however like Asha mentioned I'm not sure if I deliberated more on the first roll, giving more time for the light to leak?

or perhaps it was brighter, more direct sunshine when you shot the first film??.....................Mmm do you have such a thing in the UK, I forget!:ROFLMAO: Sorry couldn't resist, mindst I can't laugh so much as atm where i am is presently receiving gales and horizontal snow!

Haha I haven't seen this 'sun' you speak of for a while now, I can promise you that I was shooting in the finest grey England could offer me!

Having looked at my back and the way the leak is on the images, I'd say it looks like it is the back and it's probably leaking in on the door latch side onto the take up spool after you advance each frame.

I've had this problem in the past and never really tracked down the cause. I have four backs and suspect the problem occurred with a particular combination of the outer shell and the inner mechanism. Forgive me if the next part is stating the obvious, but I think it helps if you only take out the dark slide for the minimum time to fire the shutter and put it back straight away, even before winding the film.
