I'm flying Ryanair next week and given their reputation am expecting problems with my baggage. I usually strap my tripod to the outside of my rucsac - are they likely to complain about that?

How picky are they about the weight of carry-on baggage?

Anyone had any recent experiences with them?

Yep, I have.... I attempted the tripod on the outside of my bag thing and they insisted that I put it 'inside my bag', otherwise it would be considered two pieces and I would be charged. I solved this by putting two of the legs inside the bag, not zipping it up, smiling sweetly and saying "there you go!" That seemed to do the trick and they let me through! You could always take a slightly bigger hold bag with you, and stick it in that. Providing the bag isn't huge, they don't normally weigh hand baggage.

Ryan air do charge for everything they can, and are very picky on weight, more so if the flight is full. As Aimee K says, put the tripod inside a bag, and try to keep your hand luggage looking small and light, and take some cash to pay for anything they want to charge you for - no such thing as cheap flights anymore...

Steve, every tiime I see your avatar I cant help but break out in a broad grin! There is nothing better than a baby giving a complete belly laugh.. and your daughter looks wonderful. :D

Once Ryanair have finished adding on their 'charges' it's usually cheaper to take the train. I think they have a sitting down tax on most flights.

It's no better a deal on sleazyjet either. If they could sell seats on the wing they would. I wish they could be more honest about their pricing and the bag ruling is merely cashing in on the silly regulation change that happened the other year.

i hate the budget airlines, but seeing as work likes them *** they're cheap they are a neccisary evil, not sure id fly with them under my own money though, too many bad experiences!

Janice - Thank you !
She is a wonderful child, and her little sister is even more fun...
That picture was taken while she was bathing in the kitchen sink, when she was small enough to fit in it !

calm down guys, I work for an airline, none of the ones mentioned above luckily. When I work on the checkin, i anyone tries to strap stuff to the outsibe of the bag we wont except it. The reason is that if the item becomes unstrapped it wont have a lable on it, this would be on the bag. The handlers wont know where this item is going and it will be left in the baggage are. You will get to you destination with no tripod :-(

I've flown ryanair twice this week and nobody seems to care about hand baggage allowance. It's supposed to be one bag under 10kg but there's loads of people getting away with two bags and some look like they weigh 10kg on there own.

I've gotten away with being way over my baggage allowance on both trips this week thanks, to being in the queues early. I'd definately try to get the tripod inside a bag though.

ok, just cos I work for an airline, doesnt mean you have to drop this one

if you check in online you stand a better chance, because you miss out the person on check in.
the person on the gate before you go through the x-ray might ask you though.

also, they seem to be quite happy for you to take a laptop on in a separate bag now. Ryan air in seville even told me to take it out of my main bag and carry it seperately so that my main bag wasnt overweight.

it also depends on the airport, some allow 2 pieces of hand luggage, some only one. If they allow 2 then a laptop and another or handbag and another is ok. officially that is up to the airport not the airline, altho some airlines try and tell you otherwise

Sorry to see people bashing the budget airlines, for all their faults they're responsible for revolutionising modern air travel, personally believe they deserve some credit !!

Before they were around jetting off abroad for a weekend/short-break was way more expensive and destination choice far more limited, guess the more we get the more we want !!

Simon - I wasn't bashing the cheap airlines, just pointing out what to me are facts. I fly often to Spain from London, and in the 'old' days, we had British Airways, who never (even when my baggage was 60 kilo's overweight) charged me excess, we got free drinks and food, no scrum to grab a seat and I paid the same or less than I now do with Easyjet. Certainly there is a greater choice of destinations, and some cheap prices, but like I said, there is no such thing as a cheap flight..

I don't wholly believe that. They have run out all quality operators and thus removed choice from a lot of routes. Their charges are not significantly less unless you are only taking a toothbrush and do not want to eat, drink or enjoy legroom of any form.
I reserve a special kind of hatred for Ryanair. Their cabin crew get off before the passengers!

i have only one problem with budget airlines and thats the seat scrum..
i'm 6'4" and i cant sit on the normal seats because my knees go into the back of the seat in front. try that for 2.5 hours and you end up with two dead legs. so every time i'm on ryan air / easyjet i have to scrum to get on the plane first so i can sit in the emergency seats. i get really ****ed off when a load of short arses get there before me'
i dont see why the budget airlines cant let you check in online and choose a seat like BA

unfortunatly the phrase that the airline will use is 'you get what you pay for'. that is true realy. if you pay £20 for your ticket what do we expect whereas if we pay £150 for your ticket you know that youve paid for a better service and you expect to be able to choose your seat, get a coffee and snack etc. At the end of the day i'd rather pay a bit extra for my baggage and almost garentee to have it at the other end. If your bag is paid for, checked in all labled correctly, and then it doesnt turn up at the other end, you can claim for a new one after a few days. If you check it in strapped to another and not labled you cant claim for a new on if it went missing

Agree with above "you get what you pay for", not all "low cost" airlines have a scrum for seating, some have allocated seating at checkin, the single bag thing was a security requirement as far as I know, although some times taken to the extreme. :)

I hear ya! I'm 6'6". With Sleazyjet you can pay for priority boarding but it still doesn't guarantee a Emergency Exit seat still. I can never be arsed to elbow my way to the front of the queue so I usually end up squashed in a normal seat. It's usually not toooo bad unless the person in front put's their seat back

As for tripods, I've been refused one in hand luggage and had to put it in to hold on it's own (no room in the suitcase). Luckly it was a cheapo one as it was broken by the time it got to the other end (but perhaps if it wasn't a cheapo one it wouldn't have got broken!).

Thanks for the replies on Ryanair. Not sure quite what the concensus is though .... It seems it could be up to individual check-in staff and if they're having a bad hair day. I'll try and get the tripod in a bag somehow as I take the point about it getting separated.

If anyone is interested and has the time I'll describe what eventually happened last time I strapped the tripod to the outside of my rucsac on a flight ....

Not sure that all those passengers flying with BA through Terminal 5 would agree !!

I've used budget airlines and scheduled ones (easyjet/Jet2.com/BA/Air France/Lufthansa etc) and I've rarely seen a massive difference in service, at least whilst flying within Europe...

Also most of the budget airlines fly new aircraft, only a few years old whereas BA etc fly 20/25 year old aircraft with their old cabin layouts and sometimes tatty interiors

If you were to compare Emirates/ Singapore Airlines against Easyjet etc than yes the service/standards are way apart - the likes of BA, Air France, Lufthansa etc - I'm not so sure !!

Obviously our opinions are based upon personal experiences, so far mine have been quite positive with the budget airlines, hopefully that will remain so in future !!

brothers in arms :)

whats really annoying is when you pay for priority boarding, and all it does it get you on the bus first! first on the buss is normally last off, so you've extra to get on the plane last.

but saying all that, i'm flying to latvia and back in a few weeks for £22 return inc taxes. i'd sit in the baggage compartment for that price

i agree with that, im 6ft2 and i really struggle to sit in easyjet/ryanair planes, its painful.

saying that i flew across the atlantic in a 757 on AA and it was seriously uncomfortable!!!!!!!!! so its a bit of a muchness

i find that the cabin staff tend to be alot less bossy and pushy on non budget flights whereas on ryanair/easyjet its more a case of "noidontwanta5eurosandwichoralotteryticketandcanyougetthestagparty4aislesuptoshutthe****upthankyouplease"

and as for the pilots **** me i think some of them were asleep for the actual flying lessons and simply get the plane somewhere over manchester and hit the "park it for me" button, im suprised the undercarriage can take it!
