Guys I need your help and advice as I may let my heart lead my head!

A friend has an RX-7 FD 3S Twin Turbo which is one of those cars that I have always wanted albeit with a blown engine which is nothing unusual for the car!

I have been offered the car Free of Charge but would need to pay for the engine rebuild which I am estimating to be around 3k (3.5k if port and polished)...

Now I don't have the 3.5k available to me now and things at work looking tight (although payrise hopefully on the cards) so can get the car and store it and know when the engine is rebuilt she'll be absolutely stunning as a run around...

Would you or wouldn't you and does anyone know a cheap 7 engine rebuild place?

Ryan if you have somewhere you can store the car free of charge then do it.
The RX-7 is an awesome car imho, I know someone who owns one as his second / weekend car.
Knowing what you do for a living and if things haven't got any worse due to the ecconomy, it could be worthwile.
However, if you have had to tighten the purse strings and need to pay to store the car, I would consider it very carefully.
I'm not sure about if he knows anyone who can do a cheap engine rebuild but I will certainly ask him.

I would, knowing you coudl sell it on to cover storage costs if you had to.

Darren, thanks :)

Storage is free and if I can get a built engines which after a few more calls seems theres a cheap one just been rebuilt and can get one of the techies to do a transplant.

Just waiting to hear from my friend now so could be a week or two :)

I had an FD3S (UK Model) that I sold just over a year ago - the driving experience is superb and it still looks fantastic, but it'll bust your wallet unless you have a lot of cash.

Be prepared for 12mpg (considerably less if you thrash it) and very high insurance - the biggest problem I had was no specialists in Scotland, so unless it was something routine (not that there's much routine on it), it was a very expensive trip (or car trailer if it decided not to play nice) over the border....

Like yourself, I always wanted one, and eventually got one which was brilliant, but couldn't justify the cost the way things are now. Would I buy another one? Hell, yeah... :woot:

Luckily work supply a fuel card for both business and personal, I have a team of 6 highly trained technicians at hand for the day to day and semi normal stuff and Haywood Rotaries is just around the corner, after a fwe more calls my mind is made up and now just waiting to get the go ahead from my friend and will arrange collection, looks like I finally get to tick another box in the car list although it will mean my 70-200 2.8 will have to wait for a while :)

A car for free, what's to lose

I paid £2,500 for a Jaguar XK8 with a blown gearbox which turned out to have a blown engine as well

new engine and gearbox later it's worth more than I have in it and I've had 2 years use out of it.

The only thing is I wouldn't have touched it with a barge pole if I didn't know and trust someone to work on it who wasn't going to rip me off.

For free I'd still have had it

Every litre of fuel used in a great car is a litre that isn't wasted. You can't say the same about every litre used in some asthmatic supermini or miser's diesel!

I currently own a fd3s and it is by far the best car I have ever owned or driven. Fuel is very expensive as you need to run them on 99ron fuel. Maintenance isn't too bad but be prepared to do an oil change every 3 months. Insurance can be quite reasonable if you insure it as a classic car with limited mileage. If you have a basic knowledge of mechanics you could do the rebuild yourself.
