What is the best style to shoot them, freeze the action, full body and feet, just upper body to see the pain - never done this, I guess panning is not the way forward and full frontal, fast shutter will see the job done.

I would say I will use the 70-200 2.8 and Mk3.

It is a fun run but runners will have chest numbers so that should make tagging them easier for the web, about 200 runners so I am resigned to the fact that I will not get everyone as I am sure some b****r will be hiding behind another, I think I will only see 1 pass although not studied the route properly yet.

Any other advice really ?

Use the "top" most focus spot(s on mkIII?) to ensure you get the face sharp and not the kneecap or elbow.

Shallow DOF f4 ish or less to blur out the other stuff

If they are running toward you you dont need to pan

A shutter of around 1000 to 1250 is ideal to freeze the action. I'd normally go with F4 in good light which isolates the competitors nicely, but you have the option of F2.8 in poorer light with still great results on that lens.

So many runners cover their race numbers in some way, arms, bottles, people, numbers on back or even no number at all. 200 is a nice number to cover and even better if you can catch people on more than one part of the course for better coverage.

I tend to use center focus point on the race number which works well, or go for the top focus point for the face but this limits you if you see any good landscape shots develop quickly.

Cheers OG, glad you reminded me about the top focus point, I would have forgotton and got really sharp numbers ;)

I think I will take them head on, just didn't know what the prefered style of shooting runners was !

If I can get 2 bites of the cheery on the route I may try some slower shutter speed pans, just arty stuff, thank you for your advice :)
