Were off to Scotland next week camping, but instead of using a dedicated campsite everyday I was wondering what the law says about setting tents? For instance, can I put ht up in Glen coe? In the shadow of the mountains? No fires of course and we wouldn't do any damage ect. Where do we stand, were going to the lakes too!

Thanks in advance.

No worries (and you are entitled to a small fire provided you do so responsibly).
Move your tent every couple of days to stop the vegetation underneath dying.

BTW the Scottish outdoor access legislation provides a statutory right of access to almost all land and water provided you behave responsibly.
Access can be for the purpose of recreation or education and photography is specifically mentioned in the access code as a legitimate recreation.

and the weather in scotland for next week is ..............minus 20

have a good time mate ,,,and some decent piccis or did i mean picnics ,,,,anyway ,,,,

Are you not bothering with the lakes then? ;)

Meant to say - problem you may have in Glencoe is that it is very busy with campers.
Hope the weather is kind to you.

Thanks guys, we WILL be stopping at the lakes, but there are lots of nice camprites there, in the Glen coe area they seem a little thin on the ground! Besides, I want tn be near Elgo(?) for sunset AND sunrise so would like to camp there, I'd like to give myself the best chance of getting some good shots. Its a beautiful place to be.

If its busy I wonu have to look for tripod holes in the ground, just join the que! Lol.

20below is nice n toasty Andy! I got Thermal knickers!

I couldn't possibly drive past the Lakes without stopping! That wouldn be Cricket.

In fact I'd like to spend a day up a hill in the low fly zone! I put a thread up for some help with locations but not had much responce! I'm away atm and using my phone so searchieg for stuff is a pain!

Asking permission if possible from the farmer/landowner always helps if you set a good example by leaving no sign of having been there.

Rules of camping:
1. You WILL end up with more/less tent pegs than you started with. Some will look nothing like yours but you will take em anyway and there will always be one awkward wee b****r that won't come out.
2. No matter how carefully you clear your patch, you WILL end up sleeping right on top of a lump.
3. If you ever set up at night, you WILL wake up nose to nose with a very large coo!

I am amazed Tony is camping at all, I can only imagine he has perfected his erection techniques after his Argos [??] tent escapades

Hi,

Did you mean Elgol? if so then this is on the Isle of Skye which is around 100 miles further north than Glencoe. I am planning on heading up to Glencoe in a few weeks time, and have been recommended the Invercoe Campsite.

Thanks guys.. im on the final stages of getting organised! we just need to decide on how long were going to stay and WHERE!! lol.. i know we should have booked a while ago, but i like excitement! :p

Yv, im sure that was just part of the learning curve of the camping scene! well.. im hoping anyway!!

we liked the campsite at the bottom of glencoe right on the shore of the loch, ok it a bit full of families but we were right there for sunrise over the loch :)

good forum for asking about wild camping here : http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/forum

you do know about the midges ?

What is on that forum about Glen Etive is not very appealing.
Must have changed over the years. Never used to be like that:-

hi guys ive been camping in glen etive for 20 plus years.climbed most of the mountains and always taken my rubbish home!!! unlike most and i mean most people who go there nowadays. the place is being ruined almost on a daily basis. idiots double parking on the verges 4x4s over to the small island. its like t in the park some weekends! and they've got the cheek to leave all there crap behind in black bags for some poor b****r to pick up!i dont know what the estste has to say about this? one day the road will be closed to vehicular traffic and that will be that. it never use to be like that.
