I'm pondering getting a waterproof camera. I am thinking something that won't complain too much if it falls out of a canoe, rather than something waterproof enough to use when diving. The main features I'm looking for are:

  • Waterproofness (~1m)
  • Fast start up time - I'm used to the 0.2s of my canon DSLR
  • Instant response time - last time I played with a non DSLR camera the delay between hitting the shutter, and the shot being taken was infuriating
  • >12 Mpixel
  • RAW support
Given that list, what do people recommend?

Given your requirement for instant response and other things I would look at a Nikon AW1.

Yep, AW1. It's the only camera that will do all that out at the moment. It's not perfect by any means but it's as good as you're going to get without a bulky waterproof case and a M4/3 camera.

I've used mine sea kayaking and snorkelling for a week and also for other trips. See the thread on it here and my quick review after the kayaking trip here.
