Rugby World cup 2015 thread

How far do you take off field officialdom? One TMO reviewing on request or take it all the way and have several, each glued to his/her own monitor view, pinging each and every minute indiscretion/mistake? First step (IMO) should be to stop the replays to the crowd - with the added benefit that we'll no longer be subjected to people waving to themselves on the screen rather than the camera...
 
Agree with Nod. Keep replays on the big screens to decisions that the TMO are looking at and nothing else.

Ex players like Hastings, Dawson etc slagging the ref are out of order and does nothing for the game of rugby. Its good to see other players criticising them for it.

It's so much focus on that one allegedly game changing decision but he made just such a decision when he disallowed the Aussie try for the tiniest of knock ons. No one is singing his praises for spotting that. If he had missed it Scotland would have been behind at the point of the last gasp penalty anyway.

And if there were bottles being thrown onto the pitch then shame on those supporters that did it. To me thats worse than anything the ref did or did not do and it's something that the rugby world doesn't need. As Nigel Owens said to a player "this isn't football".

I think they do that in the 6 nations, you do not see the replays on the screen when going to the TMO.
 
Interesting suggestion on the radio just now, a system very similar to the one in tennis (or Wimbledon at least): each team has one "appeal" each half where the captain can challenge a ref's decision and get it referred to the TMO. If the challenge is upheld then the ref's decision is over-ruled and the team retains their right to appeal again. If the challenge is unsuccessful then the ref's decision stands and the team lose their right to appeal again during that half.

Transparency and fairness without constant disruption and no need to get rid of the big screens because the process itself adds to the drama and entertainment (in tennis it's become quite a "thing" in itself and the crowd love it).

I think this kind of system (used in cricket as well) is a good compromise between letting a game flow and preventing a genuine injustice (of the sporting kind) happen. I think a similar rule in football wouldn't go amiss either. It would help stop managers having a whine after the game, as it would be in their power to refer a decision they disliked at the time.
 
Would we have all this fuss if it had been the other way around and Scotland had beaten the aussies by the ref making a mistake. Somehow I doubt it.

There'd be a lot of fuss, but you wouldn't hear it because it would be a long, long way away...
 
Would we have Dawson etc still saying the refs a disgrace etc. I very much doubt it.

It's over and done with. End of. Get on with it. Scotland lost, crap line out call at a critical time. Poor judgement which resulted in the penalty that wasn't and losing perhaps their biggest game ever.

God forbid that rugby starts to become like football.

I wouldn't be so sure. The majority of Dawson's comments have been about thawed the ref left the pitch rather then staying to shake hands afterwards....

All I can say is thank god I'm Welsh! We're the one ex 5 nations team to leave the tournament without a headache of one sort or another...

Teams should never be allowed to question a ref's decision.
However if a ref needs to clarify what he could not see, then a replay seems fine to me.
Things that are neither seen nor checked can not be given any influence.
I am sure there are far fewer "mistakes" than in the past.... perfection is probably unachievable.

Ex-players like Dawson, Healey, Hastings etal also have newspaper columns, the more b******t they can spout the more readers they gain.

Anyway, English rugby should count itself lucky, we are lumbered withEddie Butler :(

Couldn't agree more. Don't want to see the equivalent of Alex Ferguson whinging on about a decision in the last 2 minutes of the game, and completely igonoring the previous 78: during which both sides had the opportunity to win. There will always be close matches, some of which are decided by a refereeing decision - and some of those 'in error.' If the players make mistakes, then the referee will also. Move on.....

PS: I'm still sore about the Sam Warburton red card though...:mad:

I'd like to see an Argentina v South Africa final but expect a wholly Antipodean one with the New Zealanders coming out on top. As for scores, no idea!

Why? it was the right call, the travesty was every other time it had happened refs had bottled giving a red.

To be honest I felt that Wales should have won that even down to 14, they were still the better side

I'd love to see an Argentina/SA final. I think it would be great if Argentina won the whole thing. To say they were only admitted to a top level tournament after the last world cup to have gone this far is fantastic.

I still think (hope) NZ are chokers. They've never made a final in the Northern Hemisphere and never won away from home

Lucky you. Its a shame there are no more games in Cardiff, otherwise I would have wandered into town to see what tickets were available.

For the Ireland Argentina game we bought 2 tickets for 90% of face value 2 days before the game. But outside the stadium I saw one person trying to sell a ticket for £10, and one more being given away (this was just minutes before kick-off).

Regarding the likely winners, too close to call. New Zealand looked strong against France (perhaps an understatement...), but unconvincing in the pool stages. Australia looked good in the pool stages, but unconvincing in the quarter finals. Argentina looked very good against Ireland, who I thought could be a dark horse to win the tournament. SA didn't look like tournament winners when they played us, but they did beat us....

One of my friends turned up 5 minutes before the Australia.Scotland QF kick off last weekend, managed two tickets for some ridiculous price from a tout who'd realised he was't going to sell everything so was taking what he could get

such a shame to hear a tout is losing money..........NOT.
 
Decent game played in great spirit.
 
Tomorrow's will either be a belter or a rout (IMO). HOPE it's the former.
 
I thought the All Blacks would have dominated as the Springboks had not looked that good in the earlier games but the 'boks really went for it - not attractive stuff just a good hard fought game.

Looking forward to tomorrow's game, may the best team win, but I'd like it to be the Pumas.
