Yes
Got awakened this morning at 1am by a rude phone call, that the missus answered. She put it on speaker for me to listen to, then passed the phone to me. The caller was talking silly filth, but hung up when he heard my voice. I did 141 but the caller had with held their number! Did not manage to get a recording of his voice, but will get the mobile phone set to record the landline, should the phone go off in the early morning again.

Did not think people made silly phone calls any more, given the modern tracing technology available nowadays ...

I would inform the police so they at least have a record. Although the number was withheld from you the phone company should have a record, I'd have thought.

Yeah had similar other day at ours, phone rang, her indoors answers, a voice hoarsely whispers :"I bet you've got a tight, bald c***."
"Yes", she replies, "he's watching football, who shall I say is calling?"

(disclaimer: I'm not actually married so you can breathe a sigh of relief ladies)

As they say, the old ones are the best ;)

Anonymous call reject is the simple answer. Any withheld numbers can't get through. Stops a lot of cold calling idiots in their tracks too.

I was thinking something like this, should it happen again.

At that time in the morning, probably somebody drunk and just dialling random numbers to be an arse.
Wouldn't be happy at being woken up at that time but as long as it was just a one-off, personally I wouldn't give any more thought to it.

Person did not sound drunk, they spoke slowly and calmly but in a sinister way.

it could be someone randomly punching numbers but i reckon its more likely to be someone you know...

who do you know that looks particularly pervy :D

We only give our land line out to close friends and family, as we are more inclined to give our mobile out instead. After all it's easier to replace a mobile number...Although the missus said he rang twice, as she put the phone down the first time, second time she told me to listen. Apparently I was in a deep sleep o_O

Don't know who you're with, but BT still have a sevice (specifically for nuicance calls) which basically logs and saves every call made to your number over (IIRC) 14 days.
They don't monitor it, but if the caller does it again during that time they have recordings and the origin of the call on record.

We are with sky, I am going to have a look at what they offer. Might be worth having something in place ;)

Worth a look at least. Good luck!

Would that bar a withheld number?
Just a thought.

Call em up and say its a necessity and not a choice as you are recieving unsolicited calls - tell em you will drop them as a supplier and they may well add it to your package for a period of say 3 months......you then may get it included in future...EVERYTHING is a negotiation with phone companies....:D

Yes withheld numbers would get blocked..

Trouble is we have got the whole TV Sky and phone package, so it would be a little difficult to ditch them...

Use caller display, I never answer "number withheld" calls and don't have a phone in the bedroom - don't want to talk to anyone when I'm in bed asleep! Simples.

My missus is disabled and needs a phone in the bedroom, if she falls or needs help it's important a phone is close to hand. The phone is on her side of the bed, and when the phone does go off she picks it up still half asleep without looking at the caller display. I am sure most of us would do this, while still half asleep.

We will just try and take a little more care in future, and maybe will spot that the caller has withheld their number. Trouble is, my missus does get a lot of calls from hospitals and disability care places etc. Most of them do withhold their number, but most of the time they ring it's daytime. Maybe just don't answer withheld calls received in the evening ...

That's going to be a problem if you buy a call blocker John, they can't distinguish between withheld numbers/unavailable numbers etc. and will block them all.

I will just have to try and get to the phone before the missus does then :)

With Truecall you can select numbers to allow to bypass the filtering.
With 'blocked' type calls that you want to receive (hospital, doctor, friend etc) you can just give them a PIN code to get through to you.
Also you can select the level of filtering, from a number of pre-selected 'packages' to defining a 'package' of your own.
If a non-approved number rings you don't even get disturbed as the filtering is done without the phone ringing or causing any disturbance ... you can even set it to decline all calls at night :)

To be honest, as it's currently a one night thing, I'd do nothing.

Just thinking on, we have had some rude calls before. But I think it may have been last year, but get a few silent calls.

Sounds interesting, I will see what the missus wants to do. She thinks it may be a one off, probably some silly person ringing random numbers.

Ah well...perhaps a different scenario then.

I don't answer calls which show as number withheld,

The rudest phone call I ever received was not in the same league as the OP's but was strange:

Caller: "Hello Mr Smith. I'm calling about your boiler insurance which is about to expire"
Me: "I don't have boiler insurance with you"
Caller (almost shouting): "Are you going to let me finish Mr Smith?"
Me: Why don't you f*** off?"

Steve.

If a caller has withheld their number, I normally ignore it or if I ever did answer it I let the caller speak first. Just when it goes off in the middle of the night, me or the missus picks it up still asleep. We just don't realise what we are doing until we have done it...

There is a good reason to have a phone in the bedroom.Turn its ringer off and only use it for outgoing emergency calls such as calling the police if there is an intruder in the house.

Generally i'd do that from downstairs after I'd finished kicking the crap out of him ... or may be not given the proposensity to think that defending your property is assault ;)

(joking aside i've got a mobile upstairs because i'm on call most of the time)

Had similar with annoying calls after I crashed my car last year. One company kept ringing me for injury claims and I kept saying no. They eventually got pee'd off and rung me back telling the Mrs that they were sleeping with me lol, it was a woman on the phone.

I rang Virgin Media about it and within a few weeks I had the company name and phone number who rang me that night even though they withheld their number. Also had a police investigation on the go to try and find out where they got hold of my leaked personal info from Churchill.

I don't answer any calls - landline or cellphone - if the caller isn't identified and known. That's what voicemail is for.

an alternative to the call blocking devices is the latest DECT android smart phones that have started to appear

http://www.amazon.co.uk/iDECT-Smart-Home-Phone-Android-Black/dp/B00LFNA54C/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_1_2

When you said that, I had a good look. Yes it certainly says a home phone, just looks and acts a little like a mobile. Thanks for pointing that out lol
