Hi all, I have seen people with rubber looking lens hoods before and often wondered why?

Am I right in thinking that a benefit of these may be when shooting through glass (at a zoo for example) you can get right up to the glass and stop reflections coming in?

If that is what they are for can anyone recommend me a good one if possible. It would be for my canon 100-400L

Thanks in advanced.

Yes, that's it. Very useful.

You can get them for peanuts on eBay.
I find PayPal works better than peanuts :exit:

That's one good use. The other is that some of them are telescopic, folding in and out to accommodate the short and long ends of a zoom lens. I've never seen one that would work for a 100-400mm, but that might be because I've never looked. Ebay is where they hang out.

Also available for a couple of quid on Amazon, well worth it for trips to the zoo, aquariums, etc.

For shooting through mesh I just use my finger tip on the lens hood edge to keep it just off the wire. The focus is then on the animal and the mesh is no longer there.

Strange but I have uses rubber lens hood for over 40 years.

I suppose for some lenses a solid hood may protect the front element than rubber but I still tend to buy the soft rubber as they are easy to attach. They still need a bit of TLCas they can crease if forced back in your camera bag. If they crease, try immersion in warm water and gently add warmer water. My experience is 50:50 success in recovery.
