I need to find something to cover this mess for some friends -

I'm thinking of some sort of rubber extrusion, maybe a 'C' or 'J' section, that can be glued on that will accommodate the curve but have no idea where to look. I've asked a couple of plastic and rubber extrusions manufacturers so am hoping that someone will see this with clearer eyes and can come up with some 'out-of-the-box' solution for me. It needs to go all round the edge of the back, which is about 15-20mm wide and lap down the front and possibly the back by the same sort of amount, but this is less important if something close can be found.
The stools are in a kitchen and swivel, so get knocked against the worktop a lot. If it makes any difference, there are 6 of them.

If anyone has any ideas of what or how to cover the edge I'd be very grateful, as would they !

Something like car door seal? check eBay for available types.

Probably cheaper in the long run just to get recovered.

Google chair recovering :)

Thanks for all your replies.
They were recovered a couple of years ago by a very expensive upholsterer in London, where my friends live. A shoddy job was done.
They could be replaced, but my friends like them, and would rather keep them - I've looked at car door seals, window seals and as many other variants as I can find, and have found nothing I like the look of, but my friends have just suggested some sort of bike tyre as a possible - Heather Robinson maybe, but post modern possibly (whatever that means..)
Nod - I'll give your link a try tomorrow, as I like the idea and ethos of a place like this, and see what they suggest.
Budget is not a problem for these people, but supporting people who could use a little help may appeal..

Thanks everyone !

I like the sound of the bike tyre idea ,you can buy them in different colours to ,red, white ,blue .attaching to the chair would be the main problems

Yeah, it's growing on me too.
I think that the biggest problem is getting a tyre to follow the contour of the chair back, as I can imagine that the walks of the tyre will need cutting every few inches. Fixing could be done with low expansion foam, silicone or an adhesive like CT1 once the inside of the tyre has been cleaned with meths. Might be quite fun, but then again, other people's idea of fun could be different from mine...

Would a slot cut across the tyre surface near the cut ends, with a heavy-duty cable tie looped through and pulled tight hold it in place?

Strange place to wear out, how about using the sticky grip you can get for bike handlebars or tennis rackets?

The seats swivel, and hit against a marble worktop, hence the damage where it is.
Like your suggestion about tape - I'll take a look when I'm looking at tyres !

Funny you should mention them, I discovered them before Christmas as part of the project I'm currently working on...

We've used them for a few things, from replacing zips in bike jackets (£10 IIRC), a rucksack (£10 again, IIRC! I think it might be a fixed price for zip replacements) and replacing the covers on a couple of garden swing seats (£160 for the 2, after a quote for £170 [IIRC] for one). Spot on jobs done in every case and VERY good prices. We always give a donation on top of the payment and that goes towards their tea/coffee/biscuit fund. Also gave them a couple of old bike seats to use as display items.

Last time I was down there was when the tractor decided to overturn it's trailer of hay :D
