The RSPB is inviting entries for its 2012 calendar competition.

Here is one of the rules:


"The RSPB reserves the right to use any picture at its own discretion. By

submitting a qualifying picture, you agree that the RSPB has a perpetual,

royalty free right to use and reproduce the picture, exercise all copyright and

publicity rights with respect to your contribution."

The prize? a pair of binoculars worth a paltry £119!!!

I have contacted them about this totally unethical rule, please do the same and post this warning in as many places as you can.
 
That'd be fine with me seeing as it's the rspb. They are a charity after all and people who take photos of birds usually do so because they love them? :shrug:
 
No different to lots of other organizations - BBC for one.
If you don't like the rules then don't enter. :shrug:

I agree - I am a member and would consider any picture I entered to be a donation to a very worthy cause.
 
And how much is a credit in a calendar going to be worth to a winner?

In fairness they have made it clear BEFORE you enter and not after, if you don't like the terms don't enter. They are also a charity so the sales from the calenders will go towards their funds not a greedy photographer!!

Hmmm....I think it would be worth a fair bit and if your image was picked as the best.......well who knows.

Last years winners were interviewed on the BBC news and there was even a thread on here about it!
 
Crikey this post is everywhere on the internet.

To be honest I never really got the "well I'm not submitting a photo to a competition because they want to retain the rights argument", at the moment I have over 25,000 images on my hard drive doing absolutely nothing, of which a tiny percentage - like 800 - are shots that have actually been paid for.

If I could enter one in a competition and get something for it, I would. I also (as a member) like to support the RSPB and think that it is a worthwhile charity, to that end I'd quite like to do some good and give them one of my images which I did kindof take on RSPB land afterall and only managed to get because they provide both photographers and twitchers with things like hides and the right ecology to support the subjects.

And as Jim said, serious kudos from a photography point of view that you get an image featured in a calender with incredibly high circulation given the competition.
 
Is the competition still open? Can't seem to find it on the website, Would quite like to enter it
 
This is the same for just about every competiton. If you don't want your images to be apart of it. Don't enter.

In my opinion, charities still have to pay for images if they are using them to promote there message.

Not sure what the problem is :thinking:

The details are all clear so it's down to you to decide whether or not you fancy having a go at entering.

A lot of people would be pleased to have an image (which may otherwise be sat on a hard drive) appear in the calendar for a charitable organisation like the RSPB with a pair of bincs to show for it.
