I got a new RRS L bracket for my Nikon D850 a couple of months ago and, having taken it off the camera a few weeks ago, I’ve now discovered that the screw is missing (and I can’t find anywhere). I’m really surprised that the screw comes out as I’ve looked at my older KEH bracket and the screw is permanently attached - so I wondered if anyone else has had the same issue with a RRS barcaket - or if anyone has a RRS bracket to hand to check and let me know if the screw on that is fixed or not, please, as I’m currently trying to convince the retailer that it’s faulty and the whole bracket needs replacing rather than me just having a new screw (that I’ll likely loose again!) - it obviously if it’s a design ‘feature’ and they all come out, then i’ll Just have to buy a new screw... Given the cost, I am disappointed whatever!

Thanks

It looks as though it is 'captive' but, like most of these screws, can be removed by the user, hence you would have to show that you didn't remove it.

Those are useful, thank you - at least it shows it’s supposed to be captive - but how I prove I didn’t remove it deliberately when it’s missing I’m not sure (apart from if I’d removed it then it wouldn’t be lost!) :-D

Why not just accept a replacement screw? It sounds to me as if the retailer is quite happy to remedy your situation so why do you think they should replace the entire item if it's just a screw that's missing?

But if the screw isn’t supposed to fall out then it is faulty - and IMO not fit for purpose? Plus they want me to pay 7 euros for the new screw (but have kindly waived the postage) - if the design of it is that the screw can just drop out then so be it, I’ll take the hit and be very careful in the future but if mine is faulty then I do think they ought to replace :-D

Looking at the pdf linked in post #2 by @gramps it says this about plate removal & is quite explicit about how to avoid the screw being removed by the user from the plate (NB this type of captive screw is fairly common and just needs the right procedure to attach & detach the item)

"when removing the plate, take care to pull the
plate away from the body of the camera as the
captive screw is being loosened. This prevents the
threads of the captive screw from damaging the slot
or threaded socket in the plate. If the screw needs to
be removed from the plate after it is removed from
the camera, locate the screw at the threaded socket
or threaded end of the slot and carefully guide the
screw threads into female threads in the plate"

Pilot error is possible i.e. very unlikely to be a faulty item???

PS further thoughts in regard to faulty or not?
1) I surmise that when you received the L Plate the screw was captively held and you fitted the plate AOK
2) If you examine the plate now does the slot (where the screw go) look unmarked and the threads they mention above are 'clean' and look ok to take a screw.

If yes to both of these it sounds like just maybe there was pilot error when taking the plate off............for example ~ that the positioning of the plate was such that the screw was in line with it's removal threads, so holding the plate tight to the camera body as it was unscrewed removed it completely........though where the heck it went...???

Good points, thank you, I’ll have a closer look at it tomorrow
