Is anyone here a member of the Royal Photographic Society?

Stumbled across the site after looking through the open university course and seen that they do some qualifications that are internationally recognised and the OU course is seen as the ideal precursor to these qualifications.

£88 each of £125 for a family membership :o Its not cheap though. Not sure if thats per year or a one off, I'm waiting to hear back from them.

Looks like they run events too, although there seems to be a distinct lack of Yorkshire events planned over the next 6 months. Wonder if they need a new events organiser ;)

Need to get your job done here, lacking places to go and outtings planned for the next year.

I've got a York trip coming up in a week, people were complaining about too many meets and meet pictures not so long ago :p

not me, what happened to TP on tour

Coinkidinkerley my wife, Jill, reminded me about this last week ... she wanted to buy it for me for Christmas but wasn't sure I would want it ... are this lot not a bit 'elitist' ... no wish to offend anyone if there are members here in TP ... just my past dealings with them coming to the fore ... :D

:p

I've had a quick browse on the forum they have and they didn't look that bad. I was looking at it as a possible alternative to a degree in photography.

If'n you got a degree Matt you might find you would sail right in to RPS membership at their highest level ...

IMO a degree might serve you better depending on what you want it for ... but it might also take a damn sight longer to achieve ... :D

:p

Problem me and other people have found when looking at the degrees is they are all full time 2 year courses, which I can't afford to leave work for :(

Just FYI most photography degrees will focus almost totally on the historical, cultural, theoretical & creative sides of the die - no bad thing, but not necesserily what you're after (I don't know!).

edit : Just throwing more into the mix, you should be able to find a HND course in photography that you'll be able to study evenings // weekends. It'll still be more akin to the above, though.

Yeah hoodi thats kind of what I thought, after all you'd think that most of the stuff you can do with a camera you'd do outside of the lecture theatre. I guess I'm after more of the practical and how-to side of things. As much as the history interests me (living in the city with the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television - Now the National Media Museum - I really should go there again sometime)

indeed, i believe the rps holds various meetings and you can submit your pictures to be considered for grading depending on which level you wish to go for, off hand think the lowest is lrps without looking at the site all the way up to fellowship or something tolkienesque... whether it helps at all I don't know but I've been pondering getting something of mine into this and see what happens.

find a local camera club perhaps? if you're after a how-to sort of gathering rather than a history-of ...?

hmmmm does the local college/uni do any night classes on photography

I wouldn't give Bradford College any of my money, I wouldn't even go on a free course given the rubbish I had to endure on the mcp course.

That is rather tarring all of their trainers with the same brush ! They are two totally seperate fields ! and they are unlikely to use the same trainers for MCP as they would Photography !

not only that but it was his first time he had taught was that his fault, no, they are other people who teach and have been for years without problems, also part of the problem was you already knew so much so there wasnt much for you to learn therefore you got easily bored which made it worse.

if i was you i would consider the college/uni, might be a really good course there that would work for you/me

True I guess but having seen how they run their other IT courses and how they still owe us £10,000 for me running a course for them at our place nearly three years ago I'm yet to see anything that has changed my overall opinion on how the place is run.

So I'll rephrase. I'd never give them any of my money for an IT course ;)

Hi Darksaber!

The membership is an annual payment and many events are offered both on a national basis and local as every region in the UK has a local RPS group. There are usually more events I think than what you see on the site, I'm not sure if it's updated as frequently as should be! Most of the UK regions have their own websites too so you might find further info on your regional group that way.

The distinctions are recognised globally and come in the form of Licentiateship, Associateship and Fellowship. There are major differences in the required level of ability between all three. Also in order to keep a distinction you have to remain a member of the RPS. Before applying it is highly recommended that you visit one of the distinction workshops available.

Hope that helps! :)

SO....... is anyone a member of RPS, is it worthwhile etc? :)

I have entered the 150th RPS annual photography comp, just to see what sort of response I get. Was thinking of sending some shots in the get an accreditation but as Hoodi says, I went to a couple of night classes last year so may not get around to it...... Excellent value and evening learning - perfect.
