Ok, so I'm on record as saying I was intending to have a go at the RPS Licentiateship in 2008.

So, I thought it was about time to do something about it and sort out some photos for the panel. For application purposes, I need to submit 10 photos. I'm thinking along the lines of the photos below - although this isn't a final decision. I'll probably go on one of the pre-assessment workshops before the final cut, but I'd be really interested to hear your views. Are they good enough? What about the theme / style? Is it sufficiently coherent? (I know they're a variety of portraits, landscapes (ie views) and animals - but there is a sort of travel type thing going on - except for #6 which is the only studio shot there). Anyone else done this? Any glaring errors? Or massive faux pas that should be dropped immediately? Please be as brutal (but constructive) as you can be - I'd like to know if I'm on the right lines before spending the money.

Cheers, MV

Right MV - Here's my lot :)

1. Love it, as a travel shot, it works in every respect.
2. Again works really well as a shot, good reflections and composition.
3. Great eye contact, slightly harsh background.
4. Really like this shot, but not sure how it fits into a theme?
5. Great comp, but theme is leaping around a bit.
6. Portrait works really well against backfrop, not sure on theme again!
7. Love it - Back on theme, and great as a Travel shot.
8. Nice comp again, love the extra antelope(?) on it own, branch distracts at the front a little.
9. Nice shot, although having seen some of your other wildlife shots, I think you have shot better ones.
10. Again, back on theme and seems to work well.

Quality is not is doubt, just would think a little about the flow of the shots. I suspect they may be after a more logical flow from shot to shot... It's just jumps a little, a few tweaks with some shots and I think you'll do just fine :)

Chewy - thanks very much for taking the time to do that - its really helpful. As I've already said before, I struggle with a coherent theme. That's what I feel could hold me back, but your views make me think a bit more about what's required.

This a great set MV, some wonderful shots

I feel 5 and 6 don't work very well with the other shots, although strong on their own they just don't quite fit with the theme and I would honestly take them out altogether.

The others all work well together but maybe need rearranging so they flow better. Just an idea, print out twenty or so travel shots at 6x4 and lay them out on the floor, might be easier to arrange them. Ask the missus aswell and see what order she would put them in, fresh pair of eyes :)

I'm going for it this year too, will be going to a workshop to get a better idea :)

Thanks, WanderingMind. I'm tending to agree about 5 and 6. Pity in a way, because I really like them, but I do need an independent eye to tell me what I'm doing right and wrong.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Good luck with your submission too.

Excellent idea - have just done that very thing - ordered 20 from photobox. I skipped 5 & 6 :shake:

Have you put these on the RPS forum as that's the place to get good info about what is required. ;) I think they're quite hot on blown areas and a couple of these have blown areas although I think they're all very good ;)

Cheers, Alby - I hadn't even got as far as the forum on the RPS site. It looks like it could be a useful resource.

For anyone else who's interested in this, there's also a good training video / cd type prog you can download from the RPS site, here. Certainly well worth a look.

Hi, MV! I'm an active member of both the RPS Colour and Creative groups and was formerly editor of the RPS publication Foto Art.

Got to agree with chewyuk. It's important to have a theme. You are not showing your 'best 10' you are showing a panel. All the images should support each other. The theme can be subject matter or colour scheme or treatment (ie selective focus, use of fish-eye lens or all pin-hole camera etc) but they should all work together. It goes without saying that there should be no weak images just to make up the numbers.

Decide how you're going to theme your images together and you'll do fine!

I've got my LRPS panel assesment in 16days. :) First of all; Good luck to you. As has already been mentioned, you have some very nice images there, but as a panel I don't think it works. If you are going with a rough theme of 'travel' then id dump 5 and 6 and possibly 4. Also be very carefull of how each image flows from one to the next. This is the bit that took me the most time by far. You want to consider tone (is the image generally light or dark), colour, orientation (I ended up using 2 square aspect images to flow from the first 4 images which were portait to the last 4 which were landsacape.) Hope that halps a bit. :)

MK and barbysart - thank you both. Yes, the comments here are extremely helpful and they've forced me to look harder at the selection. I'm pleased that people think the image quality is ok - it seems to be a case of working on the panel choice.

I've also joined the RPS forum as suggested and there's some helpful info there too.

Thanks again. MV

Thank you all - I ordered 20 prints from Photobox (as suggested) and have sorted and arranged and re-arranged. And sought 2nd and 3rd opinions. I've spent a lot of time lurking around the RPS forum. I think I now have a much better idea of what is required. I also know I need to get some more prints ordered. I've got a much better and more cohesive panel now, but there are only 9 pics in it and a couple are weak, so there's some more work to be done.

When I've got a better selection, then I'll post again here.

A quick question for you all you guys going for LR, AR or FRPS stuff. What are you seeking to get from it all.

Not a loaded question in any way, I just really don't get it and I'd like to see it from the perspective of someone as motivated as you all appear to be.

For me it's just simply a challenge I gave myself, a way of self learning to work on a project or theme, putting together a series of shots, just for fun really.
