I recently took a (life-size) look at a current RPS travelling exhibition - their 'International Photo Exhibition 160'. Ok, fine. Of course I noted some amongst the crop as being more meaningful to me than others, or the product of a more original voice. As you do.

As far as the assorted images go, I routinely see their equals on Flickr (since I'm choosy about what I look at there), and before anyone chips in to say that Flickr's only screen-sized, I can counter to say that images can have vital qualities before enlargement, and that many of those whose Flickr images I enjoy produce exhibition prints &/or are professionals, but that's less of a point. I don't have issues about resolution, just about the inherent nature of an image. Phone shot - fine. It's all about the vision of the photographer.

The question is - what 's the point of the RPS? Is it a mildly-updated version of a gentlemans' club? Is it geared to people who are comfortably off? Has it got any outreach into the ghettos?

And royal? I've never met a king, queen, prince or princess in my life. Aren't they just people like the rest of us?

What's it all about?

In a way all these professional institutions are. They provide contacts and networking at events and in some circles letters after you name from a professional body carry some weight.
