Royal Photographic Society - Update

i made a submission for LRPS a couple of months ago.
3 of my 10 photographs were not suitable for one reason each (on the debrief sheet).

Their debrief was very helpful and like others, i consider gaining LRPS a personal challenge. At leasti know that i now have 7 that meet the standard :)

I intend resubmitting, in print form again, next year.

Mind me asking why they were not suitable?

I have included a link to the gallery with the 10 images. They were displayed in the oder shown in two rows of 5.

With hindsight, it is easy to see the 3 errors, but you become blind to your own work. That said, i did have quite a few peer critiques to get to this list of 10!

I submitted mine printed and professionally mounted, which i believe does make a difference to the quality of your submission.

I will submit again at some time during the next 3 months, but i learnt some valuable lessons.

Image 2: too tight cropping

Image 6: highlight burn out

Image 9: hard lighting with some burnt highlights.

if I'm honest I like all them pics, esp the boat

thanks.

i would also recommend seeking critique from peers on the order that the images on your submission will appear.

If I posted my 10 on here, would that be classed as assistance?

no, they expect you to get feedback from other people.

If someone helped you compose the shot or complete the post-production then that is assistance, as the image needs to be all your own work.

ah cool :)
thanks for that mate

if they thing you have had assistance or the photographs have been taken on a training course then they can ask you for further evidence before you gain a distinction.

Fabs, you submitted your images for your LRPS?

Good luck for when you submit.
I'm planning on submitting in September (and the assessment center is 30mins from me in that month)...so I can there as nervous as hell!

Why do I put myself through these things!

Bildeston, Suffolk. Not far from Ipswich
Date: 18th Sept

I got LRPS last March, you can see my panel here http://karlphoto.co.uk.

As suggested go to the advisory days and take along 20 or so images and they will tell you if your images meet the requirements..... I took 15 they told me 7/8 would be exceptable but the real bonus was learning why the others were not, your photos are very personal to you and critque can be very hard to take, but the Fellowship members who assess your images usually on a one to one basis are extremely skilled in getting their point across without making you feel bad.... remember they look at 1000`s of pic`s a year and can spot a technical fault from the back of the room.
The LRPS is all about technical performance and showing you have the camera work and knowledge to produce a technical perfect picture which is the first basic knowledge you need to progress.
I can honestly say I learnt loads and the experience although hard and sometimes `hair pulling ` frustration but was worth every penny spent and hour working towards it, but the the biggest thing I learnt was how and why I take photos the way I do.
A very rewarding experience on every level and the qualification at the end of it really was just the icing on the cake.

No probs mate. It anywhere near you?

Congrats djinn

There doesn't seem to be an advisory day for the central region listed. Only East Midlands or Northern. Humph.

whats the stance on using glamour shots for assessment?

I would be quite careful with glamour shots, some of the judges are women and they might find those type of shots unsuitable.
I know that for the Licentiateship content of the image should not matter but upsetting a judge/judges is never a good idea.

It's nothing dodgy lol

Its not so much the dodgeness, you may find that `fine art nude` with all their bits hanging out in all directions, would be acceptable but `page three` type of glamour may not.
That may sound contradictory but I think you get what I mean

As my missus always says " one mans `fine art nude ` is another mans `porno` lol
