A few photo items were despatched to me yesterday.
The company sent me an email confirming despatch and gave me the RM tracking code and the weblink to check progress.

Went to said website this morning and entered the code. Got the following message:-

Recorded Signed For™ items are only tracked after the item has been delivered. Depending on whether the item was sent first or second class, this may be a few days after posting. Please try again later.

Information on your item is not yet available online.

Only tracked after the item has been delivered. What use is that to a customer.

Its gonna be a recorded delivery, not a tracked delivery. So you will be able to see when it was signed for and who by.

Obviously if you get the delivery then you know, but if you do not receive the delivery then you can tell if your neighbour has nabbed it!!

all recorded does is provide the sender with proof you've received it, it offers no tracking or additional compensation in the event of loss or damage.

IIRc the max payout is £36 which is the same as getting proof of posting from the PO when you send it, I only send things recorded if I think the buyer is likely to try it on, I once sold something on ebay, and sent it 1st class the buyer said he hadn't received it, it was only £15 so I said fine i'll claim, I need an email from you saying you haven't received it as it's a criminal act to claim from royal mail if you've received the item

amazingly the next day it arrived in the post

Shop emailed me and said it would be here before 1300.
It's not and RM will not be back until tomorrow.

I would not be that bothered except I arranged my day to be here for the parcel.

that sounds like they sent it special delivery which is trackable,do you have the tracking number , you can check where it is at www.royalmail.com

Yes - see my first post and you'll see what happens when I enter the tracking number.
Still getting that message.

Of all the carriers that come here only RM has problems.

It soesn't sound like it's Royal Mail's fault to me. I'd be double checking with whoever sent the items.

Recorded is 1st or 2nd class with proof of delivery.

It should've been sent Next Day Special Delivery if time was of the essence and additional compensation was required.

If they said it was guaranteed by 1pm they were lying, since the tracking number shows that it's only recorded delivery (and therefore probably first class).

Only thing you can do is contact them, it isn't royal mail's fault.

On a related note, I recently sent an item to a member on here by recorded delivery. I was told that the item wasn't signed for - it was left on the doorstep. Thankfully the item arrived safely, but it's still pretty concerning.

Anyone else come across this kind of behaviour?

I read on a postal workers' forum a couple of years ago that they regard the Recorded service as a joke. Or treat it as such. Spesh Delivery goes through a different handling route.

Quite regularly stuff that will fit through my letter box the postie will sign for it.
TBH I don't mind that as it is definitly delivered. If it were left on the doorstep I would not be so pleased.

Royal Mail is a laugh.!!!!! recorded delivery ,supposed to be next day 1pm is NOT 100% guaranteed and we were told this at the post officeand as you have found out you cant track the item until it has been delivered. (which is not much help)
Thats why we use couriers now ,at least you can track and trace them.

Oh and the Missus missed out the best bit DONT USE PACEL FARCE ....we sent a set of very expensive (3 figures) golf clubs to an address by parcel force on their 48hr delivery, and we were getting snotty emails from the buyer 7 days after they were supposed to be delivered so we phoned parcel farce and were reassured they were in the system according to the barcode and were going to be delivered that day.......7 more days later the customer was as pi**ed as we were so we offered a full refund but he said no he wanted the clubs so we pursued it more and so did the customer....anyway to cut a very long story short the customer awoke on the 21st day (bearing in mind it was a 2 day delivery service) and found a very large parcel dumped in his back garden< yes they finally got there after nearly one month with a note attached with his forged signature on them so he got in touch with me as the posting date was correct and all the 48hr stickers were there just to see if he could get his postage back.

that was in August 2008 we sent all the details royal mail and parcel farce needed and all we have had back is .....it got there didnt it....who signed for it but one of their drivers not the customer so beware....use a courier its much safer

No, Recorded has the same delivery standards as normal 1st or 2nd class mail.

There's a max of £36 compensation. Special Delivery or Standard Parcels should be used if higher compensation levels are required.

For 1st class mail, they aim to deliver the following day and will pay compensation if the item is delivered 3 working days or more after the due date.

For guaranteed next day delivery of high value items, use Special Delivery. The package will be handled better than by many couriers, most of which will only cover your package for £50 or £100 and won't compensate for fragile items.

Recorded is not next day at all.

The only service they offer for next day is Special Delivery. ;)

I have had items put through my letter box that required a signature. Postman just scribbles a signature in his book.

Next day guaranteed labels are silver and blue whilst signed for are red

I don't think Recorded Deliery is much use - certainly for anything under £36 I'd just get a Certificate of Postage instead.

I sent something Recorded before Christmas and it look a week to arrive, and several more days for the tracking to update as delivered.

Royal Mail Special Delivery is excellent though.

I agree fully but now I use interparcel because they give you a choice of courier and they pick up from your address and deliver next day if you take this option and better still they are about half the price of RM next day:thumbs:
